DHL Boeing 757 mishap at San José

On 7 April 2022, DHL flight D0-7216, from San José (Costa Rica) to Guatemala City (Guatemala) and operated by Boeing 757 HP-2010DAE (msn 29610), suffered a runway excursion after landing back at San José-Juan Santamaria International Airport's runway 07.

At about sixty kilometres north-northeast of San José (at around 21,000'), the crew called out a mayday and the 757 turned back, entering a holding pattern to the west of the airport. The flight crew reported problems with one of the hydraulic systems.

Having run the applicable checklists the Boeing touched down again on runway 07, fifty minutes after departure.

Video footage shows the aircraft beginning to ground loop as it is about to come to a complete stop. It departed the runway, crossed an airport road and fell into a ditch at the side of the road.

 It broke in two parts (both main gear struts collapsed) and came to rest with the nose sticking up high above the ground.

This meant the flight deck crew (two pilots, no other persons where onboard) could not vacate via slides, as this would be too steep an angle. Since there was no immediate danger and the aircraft secured, they opted to wait for a ladder from the fire services before leaving the written off Boeing, which can be seen in the picture below (the ladder is next to the left forward entry door).
