The end of an era happened in Canada on 28 May 2025, when Sunwing conducted its final flight. It's final flight was operated by Boeing B737-8 C-FTXF (43303), which was welcomed by a water-salute from the Winnipeg Airport Fire Brigade. As of 29 May 2025, the airline is now fully integrated into WestJet.
You can still spot some Sunwing-liveried aircraft, however, as (part of) the fleet is still to be repainted into the WestJet-livery.
Sunwing was established in November 2005 by Sunwing Vacations, Canada's second largest tour operator. It launched operations with a single Boeing B737-800, with the first flight going from Toronto to Santiago de Cuba.
Over the years, the Boeing B737 has been the backbone of the airline. In total, Sunwing operated 104 different B737-800s as well as seventeen B737-8s. In 2012, the airline also tested the feasibility of widebodies by wet-leasing two Boeing B767-300ERs from EuroAtlantic. Despite the operations being succesful, Sunwing never acquired widebody aircraft of its own.
In May 2023, WestJet announced it would acquire Sunwing and integrate it into its own operations.
