Re: Japan Airshows 2020

Post by Uni »

Some infos. for 2020.

<General>
1. In Japan, new financial year starts 1 Apr. and ends 31 March.
So a lot of official events starts 1 Apr. and ends 31 Mar.. Please remember it !
The budgets for the next financial year are usually decide by the end of February.

2. Usually, the JASDF release their open house schedule at around 20th March every year.
(Based on their budgets, but in these some years, they release only the date before July.)

3. Usually, the JGSDF release their open house schedule at early March.
Because they open their camps at the season of the cherry blossoms(early April).

4. Usually, the JMSDF release their open house schedule about 1-2 month before the event.

5. There are quite less flights from the 3rd. week of March to the the 1st. week of April.
(Around 15 March to 3-4 April).
The end of March marks the end of the financial year in Japan.
So they used up their budget of the financial year, and maybe busy to write up /finish/close their paper-works
for the financial year-end.
They are also busy for the first few days of April,
because a lot of "old" organization close on 31 Mar. and establish "new" organization on 1 Apr..
So there are a lot of personnel movements, and relative ceremonies at this season.

6. JASDF/JGSDF/JMSDF are "holiday" on Sat. and Sun. and the National holidays in Japan.
There are no activities except routine maritime patrol, exercise, emergency and /or some special missions.
Please check the National holidays in Japan of this year, when you make your trip schedules to Japan.
There are some holidays from 29 Apr. to 6 May. this year.

7. There are also No activities on these days;
1) The day of the local school examinations.
2) The day of the Flying Safety, which is usually 1st. Jul..
3) The year-end and 1st week of the new year(usually, around 25 Dec to 6 Jan.)
4) "O-bon" period, usually around 12 Aug. to 16 Aug..
5) The next day of the airshow or the open house day, except the transportation flight.

8. Please check the NOTAM at this site before you visit to the airbase in Japan;
https://aisjapan.mlit.go.jp/Login.do
You' ll be able to get the time schedule of the mass flight, para-drop, and aerobatic
flights etc., for the airshow training.

9. Step ladder regulations
Almost all the JASDF bases have made regulations for the step ladders at the airshow.
The regulations are different from each airbases and changing year by year.
1) You CAN NOT bring it into the base : Iruma, Hamamatsu, Komatsu, Komaki, Hyakuri and Tsuiki.
2) You can bring it into the base, but prohibit to use during the airshow(especially B.I. show); Chitose.
3) You can bring it into the base, but requested minimum use; Other JASDF base, JMSDF air base and JGSDF air fields.

10. Weathers:
1) Usually around 10 Jun. to 20 Jul. are rainy season in Japan.
( Late May to mid Jun. in Okinawa. No rainy season in Hokkaido)
2) Usually around late Sep. to mid Oct., there are 2 weeks cloudy or rainy days except Okinawa and Hokkaido.
3) Some typhoons hit in mid Aug. to late Sep..

11. Questions
If you have questions about Japanese airshows or need trip infos. for your spotting(in Japan), please post it here.
Some people send me private massages, but I myself do not go to the airbases so often(I go some airshows per year).
I myself have visited to almost all airbases in Japan, but it was more than 20 years ago.
The spotters who traveled Japan recently will answer you with the latest knowledge.

<JASDF>
1. General:
One fighter squadron usually has 3 training periods in one day from 0800am to 1700pm.
They start engines at about 0730, taxing to the R/W-end at about 0755, and T/O at just 0800.
They sometimes has "Night" training at the 4th period(1700pm or later).
The "Night" training schedule are often uploaded on their base-HP or local city hall's HP.
(But usually written in Japanese only.)

2. F-35As;
1) JASDF will purchase 147 F-35s in total(incl. 42 F-35Bs).(The Cabinet Decision on 18 Dec., 2018)
(Former plan was 42 F-35As).
2) The Cabinet Decision once said that we will stop FACO at MHI Komaki from FY2019,
and will import F-35s from US to reduce the budget.
But the Cabinet Decision changed and keep FACO in Dec. 2019.
3) 301sqn. moved to Misawa on 15 Dec. 2020 with 10 F-35As.
(Indeed no personnel moved from Hyakuri to Misawa. 301sqn. of F-4s was closed at Hyakuri on 14 Dec.
and "new" 301sqn. of F-35As was established at Misawa on 15 Dec..)
4) Delivered;
in FY2019: 09-8717, 09-8718
in FY2020: 09-8719 to 09-8722
5) Future plans;
in FY2021: get 19-8723 to 19-8728

Denshisen(Iruma): 021(EC-1)

6. Kawasaki C-2s;
1) XC-2 development program was finished on 27 Mar. 2017. So they are now "C-2".
2) 08-1201 had replaced its fuselage(main body), because its strength is weaker than they planned.
They will start to make up "C-2 ECM version" from FY2020.
It seems they'll use 08-1201 for this project and it means that we can't see her until her
rolled-out(FY2024).
3) 18-1202 replaced her fuselage and modify to the ELINT version, called "RC-2".
"RC-2" become the official name now.

Thanks for the information, Uni.

1. Following on from the 2019 thread: Do you know if any formal announcements have been made regarding the basing of the JASDF F-35B fleet? Obviously you think they will be based at Nyutabaru; was that based on any official information?
In particular, do you know if any plans have been announced to build a carrier deck operation training facility?

2. Do you know if a date has been announced for the new runway at Naha Airport to start operations?

Thanks,
Jonathan.

Hi Jonathan,

1. There are no official / formal announcements for the F-35B base, training systems, facilites and etc. by now.
They are working to get the ground beside Nyutabaru now in "underground".
I think they will have an announcement when they make the agrements with the ground owners successfully.

2. The new R/W of the Okinawa-Naha Int'l AP will open on 26 Mar., 2020.

Thanks for that, Uni.
I am curious as to how the new western runway at Naha will be used once it opens. I assume it will primarily be used for departures, to reduce the noise level in the town. But I am interested to see if the QRA jets will take off from there, or the old eastern runway to save time. Also whether the F-15s and T-4s will land on the new runway as well, and allow them to do touch and go circuits.

That wasn’t a question, just a thought, and whatever they do, we will be able to see what happens here:
https://www.qab.co.jp/livenahacity/
or:
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCWzx-v ... 3oXhWOK1FA
once the runway opens.

To say about the Naha airport, they will use the new R/W(Western R/W) for landing primarlily.
It will be difficlut to take landing shot at Naha.

This URL shows you a part of the Enviroment Estimation Report of Naha new R/W.
See the figure of the flight course at page 75/75, middle Right(written in Japanese)

Thanks for the info, Uni

Just got two questions for you to answer:

1. Me and my friend will be spending four days near MCAS Iwakuni this April. Do you know the level of activities seen throughout the day and roughly how many Hornets (including Supers) are expected to be seen in a day?

2. Also for Spring Festival being held in Atsugi, will there be any flight displays made other than routine patrol flights from local P-1 and P-3?

Thanks in advance,

Jamie

Hi,
We visited MCAS Iwakuni twice in Nov 19, we logged about 50 F-18’s on each visit. Along with F-35’s and the based Japanese aircraft.

And the USMC Hercules and USN Hawkeye from the airwing. The last one tends to leave on a cruise in april/may. You might want to look that up.

> The last one tends to leave on a cruise in april/may. You might want to look that up.

The Carrier Air Wing isn’t likely to embark before the Iwakuni Friendship day on 5 May (just as it tended not to deploy before the Atsugi Open House on the previous weekend, before the base move). If you do a search, it is not unusual for USN news publications to report the embarkation of CAW5.
Nothing for 2019, but for 2018 they were aboard by 3 June:

And for 2017, 19 May:
https://www.dvidshub.net/news/234446/cv ... 017-patrol
or 22 May:
https://www.navy.mil/submit/display.asp?story_id=100669

So in April they will hopefully be at home at Iwakuni.
Hopefully rehearsing for Friendship Day.

> for Spring Festival being held in Atsugi, will there be any flight displays made other than routine patrol flights from local P-1 and P-3?

Based on the YouTube videos from last year, it doesn’t look hopeful:

Thanks all for your kind description. Hopefully CVW-5 is still around when I’m over at Iwakuni. As for Atsugi, since I already logged quite a few JMSDF airframes I wouldn’t really bother with that. USN TACDEMO would have been a good addition to the show but there are plenty of chances to see them in the stateside anyways.

Hi Jamie,

Sorry for th late reply, but you've got enough answers already.

I only want to know if you have read my second messages of this column.
Because your question(s) is(are) one of the FAQ for me, and I'm trying to answer it(them)
on my second message.
If the message is not enough to explain for what you want, please tell me it(them).
I'll review it(them). (Surely, I know my English is quite poor !)

From my second message:
><USN in Japan>
>1. The CVW-5 usually leave Japan for its six month cruise in mid May and return late November.

And for the activities of Iwakuni;
><USMC in Japan>
>2. Please check this site for the MCAS Iwakuni activities(Japanese only).

Well, this URL is written in Japanese and very dull report, but he checks Iwakuni air base almost every day.
So I think it gives you useful infos. before your visit.

To say about the NAF Atsugi Spring Festa, there will be NO fight demos. at the day.
