Bastille Day - Paris 14 July

Post by Ian L »

Not sure if this is the correct forum but. What time does the flypast happen? Found a cheap flight and thought it would be rude to miss the might of the Armée de l'Air.

The best place should be on top of the Eiffel Tower, but that is completely off limits that day

Depends on what kind of pictures you want to make. If you like head-on the top of Arc de Triomphe would be great I think (if it is open), at least I saw some pictures from the Patrouille de France from that spot in the museum in the Arc.

As might be known, the flypast is over the Avenue des Champs Elysees. Try to get a spot from where you can see aircraft in the way you want when they overfly that Avenue, I would suggest.

Then I think you only get the underside of the machines. Thinking a bit further, I don't know how many mms you have, but might a spot near the place de la concorde towards the assemblee nationale be a good one? Maybe not so crowded as the Champs, as you wouldn't have the ground parade and the drive past of the president.

Edit: Just used Google. Parade should have started at 9.30 or 10.30 in 2007. The same site mentioned these two times for last year's event. at least it should have stopped at 11.30. source: http://www.parisgratuit.com/le14juillet.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

There are Slovakian Mig-29's and Romanian Mig-21's invited to fly with the Bastile Day flypast. Now let's hope they accept the invitation.
Will keep you guys posted.

Is anything known about the base the fighters and helicopters operate (or operated in the past)?

Thanks!

Last year the fighters operated out of Evreux and the Aeronavale helo's from Le Bourget and the ALAT from Cergy-Pontoise. Also Villacoublay and Orleans were used.
Practise for the flypast is usually a week before and at Chateaudun.
If I have more info, times etc. i will post it here.

The above link will also give some information about the bases involved on 14 July, check also the NOTAM's of some bases which could be involved.

See SIS Scramble 340 for a full report of last years event.

Tintin,

I know it's off-topic, but are the rumours correct there will be no Légions d’honneur given this year as a result of a huge disagreement between the military brass and the President?

Although this is not quite a photo topic, here a photo from Chateaudun this week, note the left smoker

(photo Maurice Danos)

The reason that they use Chateaudun is because the runway has the same direction as the Champs Elysee.
