Edit this raw file [Week 2]

Post by LarsEHAM »

I think one topic per week is best (if the moderators disagree please combine with original topic).

Thanks for all the positive feedback on the previous week, but I am still fine-tuning the system, so help and ideas are more then welcome.
I will try and upload as many different type's of files. That means that I can't satisfy every one every week. (poll added to this topic to give me a better idea for next week)

-1 Download the raw file
-2 Edit the raw file
-3 And upload your results in this topic (and other information like software and settings)

Sharpened the hot exhaust gasses with a separate layer and highlight overlay.

Edit with CS4 and Viveza (NIK Software)...I worked on the white balance to have hotter colors and after I worked on the structure with Viveza plug in. I added also a little bit of saturation.

Now you can see what kind of result different people get after editing. Very interesting topic!
Tonight I will also give it a try! :)

@MasterJet & EHAM:

Here is my contribution this topic.
I have to admit, this is my first attempt to edit a RAW-file :oops: so every comment/tip is welcome! :wink:
Image

These are the settings I used.
I opened the RAW file in Photoshop CS4 (Camera Raw Plugin) and did the following:

Basic
Temp 5000
Tint 0
Exposure +0,30
Recovery 5
Fill light 0
blacks 5
brightness 50
contrast 20
clarity 4
vibrance 4
saturation 4

Tone Curve
highlights +20
lights +20
darks -3
shadows -3

Sharpening
Amount 50
Radius 1,0
Detail 50
masking 0

Noise Reduction
luminance 30
color 30

Luminance
blues -4

Saturation
Greens +10
Blues +10

Saved the image to a PSD file and opened that one in Photoshop.
There I did the following things:

- Levels
- Smart Sharpen
Amount 20%
Radius 0,3
Remove lens blur
- Resize 1024px
- Sharpen 20%
Amount 20%
Radius 0,3
Remove Lens blur

Again, this was my first attempt, so any comment is welcome!

Very nice to see how many directions we all take our edits!

Your image looks a bit flat, so I would try and increase the contrast a bit :wink:

RAW-converter (only mentioning what I touched):
Exposure +0,60
Fill Light +6
Saturation +10

--->
Leveling: seemed spot on
Cropping
Resizing in steps: original -> 1600 -> 1200 -> 1024
Levels: 20 // 0,6 // 255
Neatimage plug-in: Luminance 20-30% // Chrominance 1000% // Sharpening 10%
Select sky and building with magic wand (leaving jetwash be)
Inverse selection
Duplicate layer
Filter -> Sharpen -> Smart Sharpen // Amount 40 // Radius 0,3 // Remove lens blur
Duplicate layer
Filter -> Sharpen -> Smart Sharpen // Amount 40 // Radius 0,3 // Remove lens blur
(yes, I do that twice or three times if needed)
Erase jaggies on flaps/leading /edge/registration/livery/other parts of the photo

Questions too?

Why do you resize in steps? Does that influence the result?

TIA,
Marcel

Some people resize and sharpening in steps. I have tried it, and i have really an sharper result.(but i'm to lazy to do that every time)
I read it on Belgium Digital
I use 3 (4) sharpeningmethods (every picture) :
- Sharpening 35 - 0.7 - 25 (LR)
- Slim Sharpening 46 -0.5 -lensblur (PS)
- Highpass filter 1 (PS)
- Resizing (LR)
- Sharpening "for the web" (LR)
