Luke AFB - Viper Town USA (air to air) - Updated photos

Post by Erik_7Xi »

A while ago, I had the opportunity to fly with the 310th Fighter Squadron, "Tophats", while at Luke AFB. As these images were destined for magazine publications, I could not reveal most of them until that was all sorted - so with some delay I can now finally share some of these!

While having done air to air sorties before, this certainly has been the absolute highlight of my photography 'career'. It took many months of hard work but I was extremely happy that when the day came, everything collaborated. The people at the 310th FS and 56th FW were marvelous and at the last minute we also received permission to fly over the main tourist spots in Arizona at lower altitude (Grand Canyon, Meteor Crater, Red Rocks). Especially GC can be restrictive due to the many civilian fixed wing and helicopter tourism flights in the area.

The 310th FS jet is flown by Lt. Col. Jon "Press" Wheeler, the 310th CO and our F-16D was flown by Lt. Col. Matt "Tooma" Liljenstolpe, the 56th TRS CO.

This flight almost did not happen as the we had a "Redball HUD" (aircraft malfunction) on start-up - leaving us without a HUD an thus a usable plane. As this sortie happened during the midst of the training cycle, we did not have the option to switch to a spare F-16D at short notice. Thanks to the awesome Viper crew chief, our jet was fully up and running in minutes again!

Interesting to see all have empty wing-tips and Sidewinders (or something like that) on station 2 and 8.

Thanks guys - it was an amazing experience! And the backseat of a F-16D is a hell of a lot more comfortable than a F-4E!
It was a very smooth ride. While the Viper can put you through some brutal Gs, the manner in which is does so is a lot 'smoother' than older generation aircraft.
Katabatik wrote:Absolutely stunning ! Out of curiosity what lense(s) did you use ?
A Canon 24-105mm f/4L IS. As we also planned to do some vertical Gs, I wasn't quite sure if other lenses would stay neatly in my helmet bag or would start 'floating' around the cockpit.
There wasn't a lot of storage space around the backseat, so I just restricted myself to a single body and lens. Do note that anything over 70mm is useless as the light distortion through the plexiglass canopy will make it impossible to get any sharp shots. A 24-70mmf /4L IS would be handier as it prevents you from accidentally zooming into the 'soft zone. (I find the 24-70mm f/2.8L I or II to be far too heavy for these things.)

Most jets were carrying a single, inert, AIM-9X on one station and a P5 Combat Training System (CTS) pod on the other.
The P5 CTS captures and transfers real-time aerial combat data during training missions. Because the P5 uses GPS, it's a "range-less" system that can be used anywhere.
(Unlike the first generation ACMI systems that could only be used within a certain area, e.g. the Red Flag training areas at Nellis AFB.)
