Forum rules
ImageThis is the forum to share your recent aviation photos with the rest of the community, being photos not older than six months at the moment of topic opening. Theme-based topics, not about recent events, should go into the sub-forum.
Although we will not screen beforehand, we reserve the right to delete any images, especially if clearly unsharp or otherwise low in quality. For more information on how to upload you images, check this post.
In topic titles, please use airfield names in stead of just codes, and be clear about what kind of photos your viewers can expect (e.g. CIV/MIL, location etc.).

Finally, bring any photo criticism understandable and to the point, not cynical or offensive! Simultaneously, do not feel offended by criticism per se, but simply explain your motives, taste et cetera, or ignore if you wish so.

QF-4E refused to be shot down

Post by Flanker »

last week QF-4E 68-0452 was fired upon over the White Sands Missile Range, NM.
The AIM-9 bounced off.
The QF-4E was flown back to Holloman AFB, and landed with some damage :
the left vert.stab. was torn off.

"some" damage...

Losing a stabiliser/half a tail plane is quite serious...
Kudos to those able to bring her back like this.

all in the day's work :D

but don't forget it's a very reliable aircraft:
during the vietnam war many came home after sustaining even more damage.

what also counts, of course, and all operators are highly experienced men
:respect:

Phantoms rule !

What strikes me most, is the amount of damage without even exploding.
It is just sheer speed.....
Wow !

How long before someone suggests we upgrade the engines and avionics and put the Rhino back into production?
Oh wait ......

Wow!! all bells start ringing, no wonder this beast returned from the other side....it was once part of the Queens Finest!! Delivered to Soesterberg 32FIS nov 4 1969 and guarded the Dutch Skies till nov 29 1973! After modification at Getafe (slats) is was sent to the 86TFW at Ramstein. The shots show it's early paint scheme as 80452, after half a year most of them had CR on the tail, but these early photo's still show fy 68 in black. In 1978 the 452 came in at Ramstein for runway 27 with a hydraulic failure, so the hook was down. The last of many!
BTW: check the background at EHSB VC54 0-50606, PAF P2 4702, other visitors that day: 4G91's, 2RDAF Hunters (just an example...)

Such a shame to see an A/C with so much history being used as a target for a simple Sidewinder :x
I always say a boy can learn more at an airport than at any school.

Incident happened some time ago, not in 2015. 452 won't be repaired but is wfu at Holloman and acts as spare source for the remaining QF-4 fleet overthere
