Kefalonia bush fire 10-8-2016 (heavy topic)

Post by Fishbed_9307 »

Hi all,

During my holiday at the beautiful island of Kefalonia I was kinda lucky that a bush fire erupted just about 6km from my hotel and very close to the airport. Due to the proximity to the airport the two Dromaders that are on TDY here in the summer season could make many passes as it was only a few minutes back to the tarmac to refill. The fire was not particularly severe but very hard to reach for the fire crews on the ground. Therefore a Super Scooper joined the party after some time providing my with a very enjoyable evening! I smelled like =censored= and was actually sprayed by the CL-215 but I really enjoyed the fantastic flying skills of the Dromader and CL-215 crews and the great sound of these aircraft.

I hope that you enjoy the pics!

Greetings, Paul

When I saw the Dromaders take off I went to the airport to take some landing shots only to discover that the fire was much nearer than I initially expected. This picture was taken from the western side of the airport. Find the Domader! :) After seeing this I went closer to a spot near the main road but eventually ending up near the building on top of the picture.

The presence of the high tension cables are surely in the way for taking pictures but must be hell for the Dromader crews as they come in really low. As a matter of fact there is a small monument on the island for a Dromader pilot who got killed when he flew into a high tension cable in 2009.

My new spot on the hill was great with very nice light from the low sun at this time!

A top view from the airport. The two Dromaders can be seen lining up for a mid runway take-off for the next drop.

One guy actually thought that he could battle the fire with a bush. Despite the shouting from the nearby road he was probably unaware that he was about to get the biggest shower of his life as the heavy artillery was about to arrive! :D

This one looked nasty through my lens and I actually got sprayed! :D

On its way for another scoop and for me back to the hotel as I was now seriously late for dinner and finding a heavilly annoyed better half and kid at the hotel!

I hope you liked them!

Regards, Paul

...be glad it wasn't "red retardant slurry" they sprayed you with, or the wife would have been REALLY annoyed...
You smelled of fire and ash afterwards :?:

Not that the photos would not have been worth being sprayed and smelling like a pig boar... 8) Image

The lot of 359 MAEDY, 351 MAE
would probably very much appreciate your pictures.

I smelled like a package of smoked ham and it was worth it very much! But indeed better this than the chemical retardant they use in the States.

I also posted them on the 355 and 359mira Facebook pages.

Nice ones, Paul! And nothing but the utmost respect for the crews that put themselves seriously in harms way. Small correction: Super Scooper is the nickname for the CL415 (although I would like to argue that the CL215 with its brute piston engines deserves that praise as well!)

Thanks all for the nice comments! :)

@ Frank; you might be right about the Super Scooper name, the results on Google give both the 215 as well as the 415 as the Super Scooper. Anyway, they are surely both Super Scoopers for me! :worship:
