A few days in Taiwan, day 3 (12-04-17 Hsinchu), pics

Post by stipjes »

Last Saturday Piet L and myself flew to Taiwan from Amsterdam. Our National pride flies us there for a three day visit. Piets' goal are the Tigereye's, I do not really have a goal but I like the country very much and like the photo opportunities even more. I have been there a few times but look forward to the visits. After we land we rent a (way to big) car and leave for our hotel in Hualien in the hope the weather will be ok the next day and the Tigereye's will fly. The trip takes us through rough mountains and Piets Niki Lauda skill make sure the drive is short (and my stomach almost gave inn)...
When I wake up jetlegged at 5 o'clock the sun starts shining already :-). When we arrive at the airport we doubt if things will start up but all the fod checking makes it all look promising. Around 9.30 the first F-16's taxi :-). It will be a nice day! The police removed us from the abandoned restaurant and Carrefour rooftop but there are many spots around the airport so we find our way.

Piet is happy with the Tigereye's and I am very happy with the helos, had some pics of them but not in this beautifull sunlight :-).
Around 16.00 we've seen enough and leave for beers in Taipei....

A few days in Taiwan, day 2 (11-04-17), pics

Thanks, here is day one of the other two ;-).
It is a 3 hour drive from Hualien to our hotel in Taipei and around 20.00 we are drinking beers and eating sate in town. Just before it gets out of hand I manage to escape the bar. I have to get up at 5..... :-(. Piet has a flight to catch to Manilla, I will be on my own today.
The next morning I drive south with a bag full of 7/11 food and a hot coffee. It is a 3 hour drive to Geuiren, the Southern Army Helicopter base. When I arrive there is not too much going on, the small eastern runway is under construction :-(.

I Quickly leave for Tainan but at my fuel stop I notice that my tire is flat. The very friendly locals make sure my tire gets some wind again that lasts a day :-). On my way to the Southern landing I see a Hercules land from the north. I do not know that approach but 10 minutes later I am photographing FC-K-1's landing in a nice background.

Ten Aircraft arrive in 20 minutes. After this wave I quickly drive to Gangshan, I still need T-34's and AT-3's. When I arrive 16 T-34's land of which 12 are new :-). When the last Mentor lands the AT-3's immediately take off, 8 in total. Their navigation sorty lasts 1 hour and they come straight in. After this many Mentors are ready for take off again.... Time to go and see if I can catch some F-16's in Chiayi.

I am Lucky in Chiayi. The locals fly (downwind). Around 16.00 I am done. Very satisfied I return back to the hotel 2,5 hours north.

Thanks,
Here are the pics of the last day. It took a while to post them but my schedule was a bit busy (Ukraine and Greece).
When we got up on Wednesday morning the weather is not ok, it is raining a bit and clouds everywhere. When we arrive at Hsinschu nothing was going on. We decide to drive to the other side to see the gate guards and some of the decoy Tigers. After one hour we visit the spot in the approach again but still nothing happens.... Star Bucks and a preserved F-5 in town fill our time until Piet mentions a great idea; "lets check the shelters for scooters". The reason is that if there is a flying day the crew chiefs will be there on their scooters....
We are very happy to see scooters and half an hour later the fun started:

When the last Mirages returned we quickly visit Sinshe. We do not expect anything for photography but hope to read some serials. According to Gijs Gras great article with all the locations it is possible from the mushroom farms. When we arrive we read a lot of serials and are even able to take some pics.

After Sinshe we drive back to our hotel to fresh up to our flight home. Just before leaving I drink a beer with the Dutch local who lives in Taiwan for the last years. He has a great website with a lot of information on Taiwan (I will post a link later, I cannot find it at the moment). It was a great 3 day trip ;-). Thanks Piet for the company!

A delayed reaction but: absolutely! I love all the angles on the Mirages and the water splash photo tops it off.
Is it still duck & cover Patrick, or can you move around more visibly at least on public roads around the bases?

Thanks for sharing all of this,
Erik

P.S. dutchphantom I believe you! 8)

But that's the (indeed awesome) website of Erwin Hussman who lives in Portugal and not Taiwan if I'm correct. But maybe your contact person fed the data on Taiwan to that site.

Great report anyway. That shot of the Mirages splashing through the water is an absolute winner.
