Japan trip nov 2019, day 4. log Omura and Tsuiki

What can you do in Japan at 00.33???? Just buy a coffe and visit wrecks in the dark. After some helicopters and T-33's I went back to sleep at 5 for an hour. At 6.30 I was present at the fence opposite to the Omura hangars. When the sun rose the hangars opened. Great photography! After a while 2 canabalised H-60's made the last trip to the storage yard to join the one already present there (see pic).
At 9 am I left for Tsuiki (my main goal), on the way I made a quick stop at Metabaru, there were some UH-1's park outside but no further activity. Tsuiki was very busy and F-15's were on "deployment". It was a great day!I experimented a bit with the colours in the pics...

Great Patrick, realy great :)
Hope more will come!
Thanks! Here is a log of that day (F17_114PM could you maybe delete the links in your post :-)?, it get soo long with the pics being presented again). HvD sent me some corrections (thanks!) on the Akoeno log and I edited it. Hope this log is 100% correct ;-).

Japan trip nov 2019, day 5. Nyutabaru & Kanoya pics

Post by stipjes »

After the sun set in Tsuiki I drove south via some wrecks, the best place was the Nippon Bunri University in Oita with a real nice Original Starfighter among other instructional aircraft. I arrived there around 22.30 but some students where still there :-). I slept on a parking close to Nyutabaru and flying started before I woke up at 7.00. There was a lot of activity with many visiting F-15's but after the morning sortie I quickly raced to Kanoya, one of the highlights of the trip. There was so much activity but I did not realise an excercise was going on (JvB and AvN, who I met several times during the trip, told me about the excerxcise). The golden hour with aircraft returning was beautifull!
After the sunset I wanted to drive back to the main Island again and visit Ozuki in the morning and continu to Iwakuni because of some Southern wind possibilities. After 200km my eyes closed and I looked for a hotel to get a shower and good sleep, 3 days of sleeping in the car and my jetleg broke me up. I guessed I would not make it to Iwakuni the next day.

Japan trip nov 2019, day 6. Ozuki,Hofu & Iwakuni pics

Post by stipjes »

I got up at 5 in the morning for the 300 km trip to Ozuki. No police or camera's this time (I think) and the journey went smooth. I arrived at Ozuki around 8, the JMSDF training school is based here. After some strange navigating for the overview spot I was happy to see a lot of T-5's on the ramp. In the next 90 minutes I looked for different spots and was happy to see the changed runway after an hour. Around 10 I left for the one hour drive to Hofu. This JASDF training school was also active on this Friday :-). After half an hour of photography I drove to some preserved aircraft were I was kindly invited inside and was asked to wait for some checks. After 5 minutes I did not like the situation and kindly said I would leave. For the Japanese this was not an option, for me it was because I wanted to get to Iwakuni for the Southern wind :-). I arrived at Iwakuni around 13.00 and stayed until sunset, there was so much activity that I was very sad to see the sun set around 1700.

Once again, great pictures. Thank you for sharing them.

I see on picture 96 that VMFA(AW)242 is also flying single seat hornets (F/A-18 C). Did I miss something ? I thought it was an "all D models" squadron.

Another nice selection of photos, you had better weather at Iwakuni than we did, we had two visits there.

Nice listing !

VMFA(AW)-242 planes are legacy "Hornets", not "Super Hornets". Idem regarding VMFA(AW)-224 jets.
As far as I can understand, looking at picture nr. 96, and even if it looks strange for a VMFA(AW)-242 jet, 164966/16 VMFA(AW)-242 is an F/A-18C, not a "D". It shows a bat's wing od the inner tail surface, which confirme its writings, telling it is a VMFA(AW)-242 aircraft.

The C being (temporary) replacement for the chrashed D one!? USMC run out of D's?

@Patrick super report and pictures.
