Hellenic AMARG: Agrinion AB

Post by Arnold ten Pas »

After last year's attempt to photograph the stored aircraft at Agrinion, we tried again this year with more luck. The aircraft are divided in two groups: the F-104s and the A-7s. To start with the last ones:

...and again, seeing these evocative pictures leaves me just as speechless as when I saw them for real and worked my way round them to log all these beauties in their sorry state...

Thanks Arnold.
On which day did you take these photos?
The 104s look much worse year after year....sadly.

We were there on Saturday 7 November.

Indeed, they do not seem to do anything about them to keep them from rotting away; although this year some F-104s have been refurbished and put on display (47781 for instance was put on display at Nea Anchiolos).

The rain (I think) has made the camouflage interesting on picture #8.

Hi Ruud,

Every year, the Hellenic Air Force celebrates the Air Force (usually in November) and on this occasion all bases are open to the public for a few days. Usually there is a small static (which in this case at Agrinion consisted of a preserved F-104 & A-7 and operational CL215 and two G.164s.

Besides this, Agrinion has two storage areas; one with F-104s and one with A-7s. Like last year, we had arranged on beforehand to visit these areas and photograph the aircraft. Last year. photography was not possible but this year it was. Normally, the storage areas are not open to the public during the open days.

Thanks Arnold for your kind reply and the picture... yes, it's the one preserved (I did not note that in my notebook).

Cheers.

Yes, there were ex-Dutch F-104G's present. Without looking at the log or my photos I can tell you that at least (D-)6666, (D-)6700 were logged. If you take a look at the full log in the airshows section of this MB (GREEK OPEN DAYS) you may find some more in the list there. Sorry to say that they weren't the best looking; most of the Dutch examples seem to have been used to put bits and pieces on other, now preserved, airframes.

... a "full log" indicates that it includes the A-7's!

Anyway, after a quick copy/paste:

Agrinion 07-11-2009

159913 A-7H preserved static
159921 A-7H stored
159939 A-7H stored
159944 A-7H stored
159946 A-7H stored
159949 A-7H stored
159953 A-7H stored
159954 A-7H stored
159956 A-7H stored
159961 A-7H stored
159962 A-7H stored
159965 A-7H stored
159966 A-7H stored
