My hollidays in Iceland USA&Canada including 787+Blue angels

Post by shepherd »

Man oh man.. What a hollidays! It was totally awesome!

The flight routing was:
AMS-KEF-SEA-KEF-AMS.

More info is included between the photos.. So read it and enjoy!
let's kick off! :)

The first flight (AMS-KEF)
I have flown Icelandair for the first time.. It was a VERY good (read: Almost my best) Experience with any airline.. The seating was very spacious (said by a guy of 1.85m sitting in economy class) And the crew was very nice (and pretty! ) as well!

1. A view I will never get tired of.. Above the North Sea en route on the short 4 hour flight..
Image

Iceland
My general view and opninion about Iceland:
What a beautiful Country.. The capital City Reykjavik is very nice, busy but not too big! And the landscape is unbelieveable.. Sometimes beautiful, sometimes weird.. reminded me of mars. And there are airplanes EVERYWHERE!

2. Taken while driving in the middle of nowhere, to Geysir (The geyser of geysers, all others got it's name from this one!)
This DC-3 was very very low and was clearly flying VFR. As the road turned right, the plane went right as well!
Image

3. One of the examples of planes appearing EVERYWHERE in Iceland... On a farmers field hundreds of miles from any city. A beautiful Cub sitting on a (self mowed) grass strip
Image

4. Epic.. Just Epic.. This Cessna is sitting on a Former Grass strip.. It's now a ash-strip.. The suspect is in the background.. Those hills are the beginning of the famous and imfamous volcano THE Eyjafjallajokull
Image

5. Back at Reykjavik we went to the observation deck of Perlan Wich offers a beautiful view over Reykjavik, but also over the regional airport Reykjavik Airport [BIRK]! With Fokker 50, Dash-8 and even some DC-3 traffic!
Image

Second flight (KEF-SEA), Keflavik Airport And arrival at Seattle

Keflavik Airport is a beautiful airport. Plenty of shopping and Spotting possibilities while waiting for your flight.
Very smart thing is that the shopping is all at the beginning, and then one pier with gates, instead of mixed.. That gives you some time when in a hurry to catch a flight. Although it's still a 15 minute walk to the American gates (situated behind a extra security check at the end of the pier)

6. One of four Icelandair Cargo 757s waiting to be loaded during a very heavy rainshower and VERY hard winds.. Typical Iceland Weather
Image

7. Taken from the end of the pier at 270mm.. The pier was just desserted because there weren't any flights yet.. Almost all flight depart at the same time. In overexposed, Heavenly white is the shopping!
Image

8. The Canadian forces Came at a gate! The reason was very sad.. Only one soldier boarded the plane. Missing a body part..
Image

9. The flight-deck just before take off! With the Keflavik departure chart visible on the clipboard.
Image

10. One of those sights I never get tired of.. close to the border between Greenland and Canada. The deep blue skies together with the deep blue and icy ocean.
Image

11. One of the MANY Alaska's 737s sitting at the maintanance Hangar.
Image

Museum of flight + spotting at Boeing Field (KBFI), Everret Airport spotting And down town Seattle
The museum of flight is a awesome place to go for us Aviation lovers. The way the Americans express themselves about their aircraft is amazing! You'll get excited about planes you even never liked! And the display is also awesome (Concorde, first Air Force one etc). Spotting is great too. I went to the terrace of the museum, wich offers close views to the runway and offers good light.

I was lucky to capture a 787 flying and the Blue Angels Arriving!

12. Cockpit of a 737-300 inside the museum. Had to make it like this because of a annoying plastic cover....
Image

13. The Concorde flight deck! The interior of the aircraft does not offer good photo opportunities because it's really dark inside and all covered in plastic... Nice to get inside for a time anyway! Bumped my head against the ceiling for 3 times
Image

Spotting at Boeing field!

14. A beautiful Poseidon Taxi'ing from the miliairy apron to the civil..
Image

15. MY FAVOURITE PHOTO!!!! I was talking to a local spotter who was waiting for the Blue Angels to arrive, was turned with my back to the runway. He said: You might want to concider looking the other way! Then I turned around and saw a rotating 787... CLICK, and the dream-picture was taken..
Image

I'm not going to bore you with just near-good photos of every Blue Angel. Just two!

16. Landing roll.. wooow those jets are fast!!
Image

17. Taxi'ing with a nice smile from Backseater Amy Tomlinson!
Image

18. Totally unexpected.. I haven't even seen the Helipad.. This picture is taken from the Space Needle in Downtown Seattle. I heard a heli and searched it, then saw it right below! Very weird angle haha!
Image

The Everett Plant! The tour was totally awesome, seen plenty of 787s and 747-8 freighters. Even the first (all parts loose) 747-8 PAX version for Lufthansa!
Some spotting from the observation deck at the Future of flight museum. Sorry for some backlit photos!!

19. This one was in the pattern a lot of times, touch and go's and some go arounds were executed!
Image

20. This guy must be brand new! Arriving from a test flight.
Image

21. Go around! With 2of 4 dreamlifters in the background, there also was a third at the back of the field.. number 4 is missing! haha.
Image

22. I believe it says China Cargo  Another brand new freighter!
Image

Vancouver, Vancouver Island and in general British Columbia. floatplanes in the bushes and a Private jet visit!

23. In the city centre of vancouver! These guys appear everywhere!
Image

24. You'll never Believe the name of this town it was taken.. EGMONT! (And it also was ''aan zee'' as this is a inlet from the ocean!)
Image

25. Also in Egmont. Taken at the waterfront at the rapids. Where the outbound water meets the tide change. Creates some water mess! This floatplane enjoys the view.. Who said being a bush pilot isn't that fun?!
Image

26. Doing scenic flights and even whale spotting in the area of the town Ucluelet
Image

The following three pictures have a nice story...
Read it!

27. I was taking this picture with a lot of trouble because of a high fence with prikkeldraad at Tofino airport..
Image

Then a big Ford drove up next to me. A man got out while I was still taking pictures. Then he said: Hey! Do you want to see it closer up front? I was like: I'd love to!! (I thought he was joking)
He said. Okay come with me! We walked trough the terminal building.. Wich didn't have any security. We just walked trough a open door to the apron.. Up to the Citation.. He opened the door and said: Go ahead! But dont start the engines!

Then I took these:

28. The nice flight deck!
Image

29. Comfy seats! With behind the mirror the toilet.. Covered with a curtain.
Image

Then I went outside again, spoken with the pilot.. He told some about the owner, he just bought it. Owns an oil company etc.
Then a man and woman came walking up, totally normal people with the man in swimshorts and a shirt, and the woman in a dress. But then I realised they were the owners! They flew out of Alberta just to go to the beach for a few hours!!

Then they departed and told me to enjoy the ''static display'' haha. They gave me permission to stay airside but to look out for spinning props!

30. Then I saw this beauty! Never seen this one before
Image

31. While en route from middle of Vancouver island to the capitol of British Columbia we drove past the Mars water bomber base to visit this guy!
Image

Sad photo actually.. This is the last photo I have taken with my EOS 1000D. The shutter broke after this one. Wich made it impossible to make photos of 5 Orca's and my flight back home..

32. The last one.. Taken in Victoria from a Zodiac Boat en-route to the Orca's!
Image

This was all. No pictures anymore..

I hope you have enjoyed and read the comments!

If you have any comments, questions and/or remarks you are free to give them!

Kind regards, Jeffrey!

Very nice report! I like the pictures, but even more so the informative report. Much better than just a couple of plain pictures. Well done! :respect:

Very interesting trip, and a lot of variation.

Jeffrey...

A lot of your posted pictures are not available anymore (missing link to Flickr, for what i can see).....maybe you can fix it, so we can see the other pictures too, cause this is obviously asking for more

Oh yeah! Well, this topic has received a new life I guess, I posted it in August! But if you want I'll fix the links, guess they've had too many views.

Kind regards, Jeffrey.
