This is the time of year - Gilze-Rijen in autumn

Post by Iwan Bogels »

Hi guys,

I had been looking forward to this day for about 11 months, as I knew that the trees at Gilze-Rijen would look gorgeous at about this time of year. And although the weather wouldn't be that good today, it would be my only decent option this week. So I decided to take my chances and head out to the slopes......

It turned out perfectly !

Four helicopters came out to play at the slopes. At first a Chinook (D-665), which hung around on the eastern slope for 24 minutes (...). This gave me plenty of time to change positions and play with my camera settings. Besides regular settings I decided to drop the shutterspeed to a near impossible 1/10 of a second and shot about 30 shots from my bare hand, on top of a 8-step stepladder, without using a monopod or tripod. Needless to say that the bulk of the shots turned out with immense motion blur, but one came out great ! It is with great pride that I can present my first "full disc" rotorblur shot of a Chinook.

After the Chinook I got treated on two separate Cougars (S-442 & S-456), which came out to play for about 3 minutes each. Not long, but as they landed on the western slope they both had the perfect background of large red, yellow, brown and green trees. Cherry on the cake was an Apache (Q-22) which also hovered and landed on the western slope, and after the exercise posed brilliantly for the ultimate autumn shot.

I really want to thank the pilots and crew of all four choppers for being so helpful. You made my day !!

Best regards with a big smile,

Iwan Bögels

Nice shots Iwan! I like your first shot (Apache) most for its angle and background.

The full rotor disc is good for practise and impressive to achieve, but personally I think the resulting photos are less attractive to see (as the rotor is almost invisible now).

I assume the red painted frame at the Cougar's doors are for safety issues and not to ease the aiming of RPGs...? Hopefully this does not become standard (although it gives some colour to the grey machines).

Hi Iwan,

great shots from Gilze. Impressive how you are be able to shoot helicopters with a shutterspeed of 1/10 sec without a mono- or tripod. :respect:

Myself I am glad when i can manage a shutterspeed of 1/60 sec without any unsharpness.

Indeed the autumn colors look perfect.

Grtz,

Edward.

Nice colors Iwan.
I planned for this afternoon to be at the slopes, but the weather is grey/wet today :-(

Nice Autumn pictures indeed, even without any sun.

You probably added to much red hue in this picture? Look at the red frame, it is too bright I think

Great shots Iwan. I wanted to be there too but I wasn't able to come due to a flew.
I expect this was the last opportunity this week because the weather goes bad the rest of the week.
As I write this, the helo's fly around me and saw a Chinook banking above the base just a moment ago.

Nope Bas, I didn't add any color. When I saw this chopper heading for the slopes, I first saw two red squares coming my way, and then I noticed it was a Cougar.

Jimmy mentioned a few post earlier that he was happy to see S-456 flying again. So maybe this chopper had been in maintenance and received new/fresh safety striping during its time in the hangar.

I didn't like it either, as I prefer the way it was like in the shot with S-442.

Cheers,
Iwan

Hi Iwan,

I very like the autumn colors and the fact you already planned this way back! But I do miss the WOW factor a little bit, only the first pictures has a nice angle, the others are just some side on or front images with a lot of space around.

Ah yeah, that could probably be the reason.

Furthermore, is it me or the illumination angle showing the registration clearer now? S-456 looks darker and bold. Do not shame on me if it is not true, after a long day or studying hard, details disappear
