Forum rules
ImageThis is the forum to share your recent aviation photos with the rest of the community, being photos not older than six months at the moment of topic opening. Theme-based topics, not about recent events, should go into the sub-forum.
Although we will not screen beforehand, we reserve the right to delete any images, especially if clearly unsharp or otherwise low in quality. For more information on how to upload you images, check this post.
In topic titles, please use airfield names in stead of just codes, and be clear about what kind of photos your viewers can expect (e.g. CIV/MIL, location etc.).

Finally, bring any photo criticism understandable and to the point, not cynical or offensive! Simultaneously, do not feel offended by criticism per se, but simply explain your motives, taste et cetera, or ignore if you wish so.

Chaps, for the umptieth time...

We started a Photo Forum only to give all photos a place, without slowing down the reading of info topics.

From the beginning, we acknowledged there are enough dedicated, superb aviation photo sites already and we will NOT try to be a substitute for them. What we do like, is this forum (like all of the board) to be a place where a sort of knowing each other-community can share their enthusiasm. This means, by default, things passing here may or may not be what you personally like. You know that before coming online!

As preferences will always differ, we cannot and will not divide this forum into subdivions by so many people's preferences. We did a try-out recently, it didn't work. We have one subsection, it works, we will keep it.
For all the other matters: just stick to our simple rules (i.e. be polite*), skip what you don't want to see and enjoy the rest. Help each other if you will, ignore certain posts if you will.
* Even those people who are not polite by nature: we expect YOU to adapt, not the rest.

Remember that if you post photos mainly in order to get feedback, you will be disappointed. Post if you want to share, and see feedback as a bonus. If you want more of a certain kind of photos: give 'm to us! No-one can or should dictate here what others should show. One can always ask, but never demand.
If you decide to stop posting here for whatever reason: it's your loss. Stuff here will go on but we will be missing your pictures. You may not always get the praise you hoped for, but there is always someone interested. It's up to you.

Take care,
Erik

Don't agree with you Roel,
Roel van Gestel wrote:I think it will be always 'them vs. us'. 'Civil vs. military', 'artistic vs. clear', 'numbers vs. pictures'.
OK, agreed on that one.
Roel van Gestel wrote:I just want to say... It is a hobby. A minor one if you look it up.
Sarcastic replies don't work.
Maybe they don't, but they're funny nonetheless, se keep 'm coming please.

Roel van Gestel wrote: Taking pictures when it's not allowed doesn't work.
Maybe it doesn't work for you, but it's way more fun to others. I happen to agree with you if we're guests on an airbase or a factory, but in all other occasions, take all you can without being caught is what I like to do.

Roel van Gestel wrote: Because next time I want to take a picture, they tell me they don't like 'my kind' because of serious misbehaviour of others before me. Serious misbehaviour is one thing, taking pics when not allowed is another. I never ever misbehave ( ;-) ) but take pictures whenever I can, regardless of being allowed or not.

What can I say. If adhering to the forum rules is too much to ask... I just highlighted that part even more, maybe that helps. I am reluctant to start enforcing yet another rule, this is all supposed to be fun.

To be exact, part of the rules is:
In topic titles, please use airfield names in stead of just codes, and be clear about what kind of photos your viewers can expect.
The part between brackets is e.g. (i.e. by example) meaning that specifying civ or mil of both is still optional.

Having said that, why not make your audience happy as a poster in stead of frustrating them, and provide that information? :D

...and what is the result of all those comments from these 'award winning world class photographers'? Within some time no one dares to post it's piccies because of the risk of being criticised. This forum will remain a private garden for those excellent specialists...:-( Please keep on posting everything what is interesting for YOU!!!

So, in other words: if someone comes here only to receive cheers, that someone will be disappointed some day, unless he/she manages to produce only photos that everyone likes, always. Seems undoable to me.
If someone comes here to receive comments, perhaps improve his/her photography through those comments or at least get to know the public better, that someone will benefit from this forum (or simply conclude it's not his/her cup of tea*).
If anyone feels insulted or harassed by comments, use the report function, as per the rules agreed by when signing up as a member.

And the hardest one: this only works by co-operation! That means two things:
- Bring any criticism understandable and to the point, not cynical or offensive!
- Do not feel offended by criticism per se, but simply explain your motives, taste et cetera, or ignore if you wish so.

Finally: do keep in mind the majority of viewers is pleased by the majority of photos, and many viewers will remain silent always. You are still doing these viewers a favour by showing them your photos. :bthumb:

No, please no subforum. If you want comments because even you yourself don't like your pics, go to the Photography forum (and only post an example), if you just want to show what you've made, post them here and accept that people may like it or not. It's been said before, but it helps if you explain why you post that out of focus picture.

For the record: I liked Peter's pics a lot, and even thought there was enough propblur too. IMHO (most off) the props weren't frozen at all, just no full discs, which I'm not too fond of anyways.

Just my 2 cents,
Marcel

But what's the deal anyway? I rarrely have the feeling critism is being given in an impolite or inappropiate manner. If you can't handle criticism, than don't post. Critisism is the only way to learn or improve. It's very basic.. I am perfectly able to distinguish between criticism and taste. Because that's what it all boils down to.

And as far as jealousy goes, this has been plaguing this hobby for as long as I can remember. It's only human nature.. Most of the time great opportunities are a matter of hard work, luck and perseverance. (Or joining an airforce as one forum member used to say whenever on-base pictures come cropping up. ;-) )

So do we as moderators, and I personally feel the balance between (properly given) negative and positive comments is about 1 to 20. Again personally, I wouldn't mind a lot more critical views, but we should not forget this is above all a spotters' message board, not a photographers' gathering.

It turns out to be very easy to trigger emotions sometimes, so the best we can do is try and avoid that from the beginning. Also, by having this in the Forum rules above now, we can more easily draw the line. And in the end, everyone makes their own decision on wanting to participate in this forum or not. We just want those who do to enjoy it. That is the whole point of providing a message board apart from all our other activities as Scramble.
