I try hard with my 400mm+1.7 and not even get it full size sometimes. It seems cropping is the new way of making compositions..

). Besides that, prime lenses have no flexibility what so ever, so waiting for that right moment, can mean it is not full in your scope anymore, so you just take the picture and compose it afterwords, the way it comes out best.... and as far a 400mm +1.7 can go

About the picture this was what I was looking for. No more flare needed. The one tell it all and I liked the rolling effect of the tail through the smoke. Didnt see it the same picture around yet and that what I like about it. But as you mentioned, its a matter of tast that always counts.
Framing every shot too its 100% is indeed not always possible with a prime, but therefore its a 200-400mm
