that explains a lot to me ;-) I try hard with my 400mm+1.7 and not even get it full size sometimes. It seems cropping is the new way of making compositions.. :?

Hmmm......actually not.

In the old days, when we were printing black&whites ourselves, we were often making "deelvergrotingen". This was the equivalent of cropping. So nothing new here.

Cheers,

Nice shots Iwan :scramble: Nr 2 rocks !

Nice shots Menno :scramble:
Although you're hijacking Iwan's topic
Nr 2 could rock if you remove the guy in front

With a surplus of image quality ( acquired by all those nice hardware we own these days ) it's real easy to crop without loss of quality :D

The old days I know them. Its not that it is new, no. Its the way how want to make your image. My effort is to get as close to how it is in my frame and try to avoid cropping. These days you can crop so easily and so much from a D3s, you wont see it. The magic for the right time and right moment is made easier that way.. but he Iwan, that my thoughts ;-) SeeU!

Thanks Martijn :scramble: By the way, where are your shots, or do i have to look at your ATI account?

About the cropping: Like Iwan and Martijn allready said, as long as the quality stands ground, cropping is actually the right tool to make a nice composition, especially with those fast moving fighter jets. It´s not allways easy to make a perfect, side to side and top to bottom frame of an F-18 making a high speed pass while moving all over the place, twisting and turning (especially with a 500mm F4 and 1.4 TC handheld, boy, that´s working your ass off  ). Besides that, prime lenses have no flexibility what so ever, so waiting for that right moment, can mean it is not full in your scope anymore, so you just take the picture and compose it afterwords, the way it comes out best....

Cheers!

Menno

I guess Im the only one thinking what I think about cropping. Would be fun discussing it next to the runway someday ;-)

BTW this is no crop ;-) and as far a 400mm +1.7 can go

Nice picture.....

Two things: 1- it´s not a fast moving fighter jet. 2- having more flares in that image would have added even more drama, therefor shoot it with less mm´s and crop it back to the result you´re looking for....and that´s exactly what we mean to say. But let´s not forget this is a matter of taste issue too.........and there´s absolutely no discussion about somebody´s taste, period. The same goes for the ammount of contrast that i use...some like it, a lot don´t......anyhow, i do like it, and that allways comes first, to my opinion.....

framing an airplane (especially those fast moving and twisting fighterjets) a full 100% to it´s composition, every shot you make, is Utopia and simply not possible with a prime lens.

thanks..
I doesn't matter what it is. Its whether you wanna go for cropping or not. And thats possible with everything, a jet. a triplane or bird.
About the picture this was what I was looking for. No more flare needed. The one tell it all and I liked the rolling effect of the tail through the smoke. Didnt see it the same picture around yet and that what I like about it. But as you mentioned, its a matter of tast that always counts.
Framing every shot too its 100% is indeed not always possible with a prime, but therefore its a 200-400mm ;-)

As a matter a fact i like it with that guy in front, giving more perspective to the greatness of the plane, but okay, here we go, this ones for you....

No, they 'll come next week or so :D
I 'm on a photoheavy trip at the moment :P
Started at Sanicole sunset show, next day was Leeuwarden, finished that Saturday in Hamburg and from last Monday I'm in Denmark ( with a small visit to CPH off course ).
