Meiringen (LSMM) - 2009 MIL

Post by Niall »

Hi,

Wonder whether anyone can help me with some information regarding the flying activities at Meiringen. I will be in Switzerland in July and was considering spending a day at Meiringen. However, I have been told that flying often stops for long periods in the summer. Can anyone advise where I might obtain information as to when/whether flying stops at the base.

Thanks in advance.

Swiss Airfield closure periods for 2009 should be as follows:

Emmen 29.06 - 24.07
Meiringen 29.06 - 03.07

Alpnach 03.08 - 14.08
Meiringen 03.08 - 28.08
Payerne 03.08 - 28.08

Some airfields do have limited operations for helo`s etc, but basically the runways are usually closed.

Lads,

Thanks for the replies and suggestions. It looks like there will be some flying when I'm in the area (10th to 19th July).

For this period at Meiringen you can expect 10 to 50 departures per week. For comparison only: Payerne has more than 100 departures per week during that period!

Anyway the SAF will completely shut-down their jetactivities during august (expect Patrouille Suissse and RUAG/Armasuisse sorties).

Thanks for that additional information, unfortunately, my level of German is very limited, but the tables are a great assistance. I will be staying in Interlaken during my stay, so that is why I thought of visiting Meiringen. Guess I'll have to consult the train timetables to Payerne!

Are the photo opportunities as good in Payerne?

Cheers,

Niall

Visited Meiringen on Wednesday, as there is the annual "Wiederholungskurs" of two fighter squadrons (one Tiger and one Hornet squadron each) going on. The course still runs until the end of next week. I arrived shortly after 9 o'clock in the morning and stayed until noon.

18/03/2009:

J-3074 F-5E
J-3077 F-5E
J-3079 F-5E ("Last Tiger Pilot School" badge)
J-3093 F-5E
J-3095 F-5E

J-5004 F/A-18C
J-5008 F/A-18C
J-5010 F/A-18C
J-5011 F/A-18C (Tiger tail)
J-5014 F/A-18C
J-5021 F/A-18C

J-5236 F/A-18D

All of them of the Swiss Air Force of course.

Cheers

Good evening,

Last weeks several visits were made to Meiringen.
To give you an idea what can be seen without a WHK being held,
dates and times were:
Monday 25-05-09 (13.15/16.20)
Tuesday 26-05-09 (07.55/09.40)
Thursday 28-05-09 (07.55/08.40)
Friday 29-05-09: rather quickly turned out to be a non flying day !

The following aircraft were noted:
BASED:
J-3036 F-5E (25-05)
J-3068 F-5E (25-05)
J-3080 F-5E (25-05)
J-3089 F-5E (25-05) Patrouille de Suiise c/s
J-3095 F-5E (25-05)
J-3209 F-5F (25-05)
J-3210 F-5F (25-05)
J-5006 F/A-18C (28-05)
J-5026 F/A-18C ((25-05/26-05)
J-5238 F/A-18D (25-05/26-05/28-05)
All 7 Tigers arrived Monday afternoon within a 15 minute timeframe, arriving in a 4-ship and a 3-ship. As it was the only F-5 activity noted this week, I guess I was lucky in this case..........

Instructional airframes "halle 1"
J-3096 F-5E
V-222 SA316B

Visiting aircraft 25-05
A-907 PC7
V-612 PC6
V-614 PC6

Visiting aircraft 26-05
A-904 PC7
A-907 PC7
V-612 PC6
C-412 PC9
V-262 SA316B
And a Hornet 4-ship from Payerne doing mutiple fly-by's at mid-level
between 09.00 and 09.20....... Maybe anyone for the serials ?

regards,

Meiringen has no traffic from 20.07 to 31.07.2009 and 31.08 to 04.09.2009. The airfield will be closed from 03.08.09 to 28.08.09. The hornets are going to Wittmund for 6 weeks...

We arrived around 8.30, just in time to see the first morning wave of 4 depart. The light was not yet very good for pictures. We decided to position ourselves on the terrace of the restaurant for the 2nd wave in the bright sun, only to see them switch runways. No luck on decent take-off shots at Payerne for us...

Hi all,

we spent the morning of 06-10-2009 at Meiringen. Seen were:

J-5005 F/A-18C
J-5007 F/A-18C
J-5011 F/A-18C Tiger tail
J-5022 F/A-18C
J-5233 F/A-18D
J-5236 F/A-18D
T-320 Super Puma
T-338 Cougar
T-354 EC635
V-249 SA316
V-268 SA316
V-613 PC-6
V-622 PC-6 Patrouille Suisse c/s

A Hunter looking an awfull lot like HB-RVV flew high over the field. One of the Swiss Kamovs was also in the neighbourhood, but was too far to read.

T-366 EC635P2+ arrived for lunch

After the fog cleared, it tuned into a nice sunny day.
Sitting at the viewing terrace at Meiringen, looking at the mountains and cows is a nice start of the day.
As the Hornets had performed some nightflying on monday, flying did not start untill 1030lt.
As the wave landed and the EC635 arrived, the tower controller shut everything down and stepped down his tower for lunch.

For me, it was time to drive to Alpnach to see more EC635s.
Greetings,
