Antalya (LTAI/AYT) - 2009 CIV

Hello everyone,

I've just arrived back from Antalya, where I've been to for spotting. When I first though about going there, I had planeed to visit it during August, when the airport is very busy and full of Russian stuff. However, I changed my destination for the Summer holidays, and put AYT on April, not because I wanted to, but because I that was the only available time of the year that I had to visit it, altough I knew it wouldn't be as good as in the Summer ...
The route was LIS-LHR-IST-AYT with Star Alliance members TAP and Turkish Airlines. I arrived on Saturday night, the 4th April and on Saturday morning, the 11th.
All the days were spent doing spotting, but to my sadness the airport is not yet very busy, having sometimes to wait for about one hour to see another arrival. The best days were Sundays and Fridays (Saturday, when I left, was also going to be a good day), and most of the traffic is TC registered aircrafts. As for runway used, during my stay, 36C was allways in use during the morning, then samewhere between 11-14, ATC would change to 18C. This for the landing traffic. I found 4 spotting points for morning and afternoon photos on both runways and, although AYT doesn't have a reputation to be spotters friendly, I never had any problem, although locals will probably ask you what you are doing, but since they don't speak English, they will ago away (by the way, I was offered same vegetables by two farmers, after declining an invitation to go with them and drink same tea, and on another ocasion I was given same tea... That's the Antalya way to do spotting! If anyone is interested on the exact locations, please send me a private message, and I will be happy to send them by e-mail.
If you don't have any plans for the Summer, I recommend Antalya. The Old Town, is very beautiful, plus there are lots of beachs and a very interesting airport. It's a perfect destination for the all family, I would say.

As you can see, the only Russian airliners were the Red Wings Tu-204, altough I've seen two IL-86 overflying (northbound). One was of Atlant-Souyz and the other Ural Airlines. Plus one Tu-154, a B747 (I think it was Atlas Air), and many others.

Would like to go back same day to Antalya, of course during the Summer, but for now I find myself pleased to say: I did planespotting in Antalya.

If anyone has any questions about spotting in AYT, I'm ready to help you out.

Is it true that Il-86's will soon be banned from Turkish skies?

Did you see any mil traffic at the airfield, because i believe there are some mil aircrafts based at the field.

Hi Theo,

Well, I know that many of you here at scramble love military aircrafts, the same way I love airliners, so I usually never take photos or registrations of military aircrafts. This means that I don't have any info on reg. of the 2 F-4 Phantom that made several low apporaches on 36C and 18C on a particular morning. While there was no civilian traffic these 2 aircrafts were the Kings of AYT, making everyting they wanted to do. They were really noisy aircrafts, and also, in my opinion, a little bit to slow for fighters...

Sorry, I never remembered that someone could want this information.

By the way, I saw the shelters, after taking-off 36C, and from what I've seen I would say 36L/18R is only used for military aircrafts.

I have bin there 25april and 2 may. did not see any mil traffic. I did saw the shelters and platform and mil tower, but i think these are only in use when there is an deployment. everything was closed and no mil activity

The 3 best days of spotting at AYT are Friday,Saturday and Sunday
Such a nice traffic. Also we met 3 other spotters from Holland very friendly guys. ( Maarten,Vincent and Kees )

Sometimes the type can be wrong but ok questions or other things just ask ...

No problems with security, although I was standing all the time in front of the windows and my 25x60 telescope was clearly visible.

Hi U all,

I'm very interested in Antalya, but as we all know Turkish police can be very hostile against photographers. Are there any places little bit further away from perimeter where you can take pictures of arrivals at both ends (18 and 36) without the police bothering you?
