REQ: ID An-2 D-FONE

Post by erik_kamphuis »

Hi,

I have a problem with the Red Baron An-2 D-FONE.
I saw it in 1996, read that c/n 18118 was burned in aug'03 or aug'04 at Dinslaken, so written off! Now I see many pictures from a Red Baron An-2 D-FONE in the net taken in 2006/2007 and 2008! Is there a new An-2 flying with this serial D-FONE and the same c/s? What is it's c/n?
The first D-FONE (c/n 18118) is former NVA 459.

Hi Erik,

Air-Britain's European Registers Handbook 2008 says about D-FONE;

Antonov An-2P c/n 18118
Damaged by fire 2.8.03, cancelled 7.09.04 but restored on 12.4.05 as c/n 17812 which is D-FKMD/"D-FONE", apparently now registered twice!

And D-FKMD says 'Painted as "D-FONE" c/n 17812.

So it seems to me that frame 17812 is flying painted as D-FONE now and they are not sure about frame 18118, maybe the used parts of that one for the 'new' D-FONE?

Not much clearer i'm afraid, but it seems to me that the one flying around now is another frame than the one you saw in 1996.

Good luck,

Ard

Correct. Here are the complete entries for both frames from the Soviet Transports group, showing the tragic facts about the original D-FONE...
