Curious plane spotters were yesterday fooled into thinking a major incident was unfolding at Dublin Airport as staff took part in an emergency exercise.
Simulating the drama of a crash landing, 40 firefighters, ambulance personnel and gardai battled a makeshift fire at a Boeing 737 training plane.
DAA spokeswoman Siobhan Moore said the aircraft was out of the view of the public and passengers in the airport.
"But plane spotters close by to the airport phoned in wanting to know what was going on," she said.
The Boeing 737 was an old Ryanair aircraft with makeshift engines and is used by the airport for training and emergency simulations. The exercise takes place every two years.
