18dec2017 Polish MiG-29 crash

Post by Worldnis »

A Polish MiG-29 crashed today near its homebase of Minsk Mazowiecki.
While returning to the base, at 17.15 local contact was lost.

A search for two (!) hours by Polish State Forests in the wooded area led to the pilot and the plane. The pilot had ejected and was taken to a hospital in Warsaw. Polish MOD conformed this and noted that MiG-29 flights are now suspended, this according to Deputy Defense Minister Bartosz Kownacki.

The first Polish MiG-29 crash in 29 years of service I think! Quite an achievement!

Is the new gray scheme part of an overhaul/upgrade or just a repaint?
BTW - Nice capture Olli

It is being applied during periodic airframe works at WZL2 in Bydgoszcz.
Infact new scheme is highly effective on MiGs and Fitters, as aircraft are blending into sky and clouds making them much harder to see, even during airshow displays.

According to Polish MoD Undersecretary, pilot of Polish AF MiG-29 crashed on 18/12 DID NOT EJECT  ... Survived landing in high trees with broken ankle only - what a luck!

Wow indeed! And testament to the robustness of Russian design ;-)

Comparing the previous and new pictures, I notice a new antena appearing on the back of the re-sprayed aircraft, behind the cockpit.
So I guess it involved a modernization process also.
