...preparations are in progress...

has photos.

China's amphibious aircraft AG600 is making its maiden flight in Zhuhai.

AG600 is the world's largest amphibious plane and the first large specialist civil aircraft developed entirely in China.
With a 36.9-meter body and 38.8-meter wingspan, it can compete with Boeing 737 or Airbus 320 in size. Its chief designer Huang Ling expects AG600 to play important roles in various tasks including forest fire control, maritime search and rescue.

China's first home-grown large amphibious aircraft AG600 completed its first test flight and returned to the Jinwan Civil Aviation Airport in the city of Zhuhai, south China's Guangdong Province, on Sunday.

The flight lasted about one hour at an altitude of 3,000 meters after the amphibious aircraft AG600, code named "Kunlong," soared into the sky from the airport at 9:39.

The plane has a 39.6-meter-long fuselage and 38.8-meter wingspan, said its developer, the state-owned Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC).

It is believed to be the world's largest amphibious aircraft that is in the R and D phase.

The AG600 is indeed in about the same class as its' Japanese counterpart.

The previous large amphibious flying boat project for the Chinese Navy was not much of a success, eventually...

I don't think this one will hit big sales either.
The four SH-5's were replaced by a Y8 ASW version a few years ago (with sonobuoy bay/mad-boom etc)
This one is primarily for SAR duties.
