KC-130j mm62178

Post by Stafsels »

Hi all,

Looking at the databases is it correct to reconstruc that mm62178 c-130j has been stored in 2018 and refurbished into kc-130j and been redelivered to the AMI this year?

Or is it as simple as to put two refueling pods under ones wings and let the spotters have a field day figuring it out....?

So kc-130j it is.

Greetings,

Stafsels

Well, since aircraft recognition is one of the principles of this hobby you probably know the answer to your question....

Well, I personally recognised the aircraft as a C-130, and even as an J-version because of the sixbladed props. I also recognised it as Italian, based on the roundel, serial, code and titles. What I didn't recognise though is the exact subtype, being a C- or KC-version. For those kind of details I often use a database. So a more helpful answer would be appreciated..... :?

A KC-130J can be equipped with a removable fuel tank that is carried inside the cargo compartment. I thought the plane can also be used as an aerial refuelling platform without this tank. However, the two wing-mounted hose and drogue refueling pods (which were clearly visible) makes it a KC-130J to me. But that is my personal opinion. :D

From some years two C-130Js have the wing pods installed (AAR for EF-2000/HH-101/Trainer) and they are KC-130J but they are also used as transport aircraft.

When one of these KC-130J is grounded for heavy maintenance the kit will be removed and another C-130J will receive the kit to be configured as KC

The underwing pod may be removableand the fuselage tank is palletized, but doesn't the KC require special plumbing and fuel management system to cross feed the fuel between the various tanks, engines, dump and refueling system? If not, there would be no difference between a KC and a regular C?

it's a 'kits' that allow any of the C-130Js to be converted to KC-130J

A quick check on a.net shows the following Hercs with and without refuelling pods over the years:
62176
62178 (not by picture on a.net, but obviously now with the pods)
62179
62180
62181
62183
62184
62185
Of which the 76 has crashed since and the 84 has been in storage without engines for a few years already.
I think it is save to say the Hercs are easily converted to carry the pods. Perhaps we shouldn't call them KC-130J in that case, but C-130J 'with refuelling pods'.

Boven het MM -serial staat op mijn foto toch heel duidelijk C-130J en geen KC-130J.
