RNLAF T-255

Post by Stafsels »

Hi all,

In last scramble some remarks were made about RNLAF K(D)C-10 T-235 from 334sq.
Something about not very much flying hours left...
What is the exact background of this story?

Greetings,

Henk

This is a typo  as it applies for T-255 instead of mentioned T-235.

The future of this DC-10 is in serious danger; she only flew two operation missions this year! and beside that remains shuttling between Eindhoven - Italy and Woensdrecht for (additional) maintenance purposes, next to this the previous six years also haven't been succesfull as the modification from to intended KDC-10 had to be cancelled due to budget-reasons.

She was intended to be a addition to the cargo-fleet mostly for Afghanistan operations, reducing the rentals of IL-76 and likewise planes and her intended budget for operational costs increased so far of schedule that dropping the programe will save more money than continueing will cost. The Afghan operations are also ending earlier than expected to her mission objectives become very hard to reach.

A final decision is expected soon as effeciency becomes more important the following years.

Kind regards,
Ron

Hard to believe that it is almost 6 (!!!) years since this DC-10 first touched down at Eindhoven (25-10-2004). During much needed maintenance in Italy it received its RNLAF colors and was delivered to Eindhoven again on 30-05-2006. Since then it is relative quiet about this aircraft and altough the cockpit modification is completed I have heard that the certification proces is still ongoing...

What a waste of money if this aircraft will never see operational life..

The original text in the Scramble (movements Woensdrecht) reads:

"The 'show' around KLu DC-10 T-235 remains as her airtime still remains close to zero"

If I read this correctly it just says that the crate just haven't been flying much lately, not that the airframe has no flying hours left.
On the other, it might very well be true for one of these aircraft anyway but that is not how I read it.

Or are you referring to another story?

Like Mark B says, certification of the glass cockpit, Link 16, etc. has been delayed. However, the certification hurdle should be cleared before the end of the year according to some sources. Fingers X-ed.

And then... only the interior issue remains. According to: Materieelprojectenoverzicht Prinsjesdag

Not entirely; the given link and overview also revealed that the CUP (Cockpit Upgrade Programme) is expected to be finished in the 4th quarter of 2010 (several previous deadlines where missed over the last years), the interior will be left to finish when possible ... ...
