Question: Aggressor colourschemes

Post by Canberra TT.18 »

Hi

Question

A large part of the aggressor force (USAF, USN & USMC but also JSDAF) fly in exotic colourschemes, much to our ethousiasment. Where as you think of it an aggressor has to represent a possible hostile aircraft and should be in the same (boring) grey colours!?
So why do they paint many aircraft in very (odd) schemes? Some of which I have never seen on a possible opponents aircraft!

The purpose of dissimilar air combat training is that you learn how to fight against an opponent that acts and looks different than what you are used to. An F-5 in banana peel colors is definitely not something that you run into everyday...

In the past (like F-5E 527th Alconbury) the aircraft used to mimic Russian planes as much as possible. But the world is less simple than it was back then. Maybe these days the number of opponents is much greater so they want more diversity in schemes.
