ETNN is open on the 20th for pre-scheduled flights (but don't expect much to happen).

Hey!

In addition to a message in lScramble concerning flying at Norvenich:

picked up some info about the transition to Eurofighter from one of the Norvenich spotters some time ago. According to him, flying with Tornado will be terminated in august. The base will then be closed for major maintenance/constructions in preparations for the arrival of the Eurofighter. That should all be completed in feb 2010 when the local unit will start operations again with Eufie.
No further details but thought I'd put this piece of info here :) .
Any on you have any more about this?

Greetz,

Nörvenich - can this really be true??

Post by Henrik »

Hello all,

I hope this is not OT for this forum, but I have just finished my German Tornado serial run-down and - to my big surprise - I have discovered that it seems that JBG 31 at Nörvenich only has 26 assigned Tornadoes inc. 6 IDS trainers?? Can this really be true?? Are they already loosing Tornadoes as part of their Eurofighter conversion - I believe that the bomber version of the Eurofighter has been delayed and I didn´t expect JBG 31 to start loosing their Tornadoes this soon?!?!

Also a rather large number of Tornado IDS models fly with JBG 32 at Lagerlechfeld in addition to the Tornado ECR models normally associated with this wing?! I count 11 Tornado IDS bombers in addition to 6 IDS trainers with this unit as well as 33 ECR models!!

JBG 33 at Büchel seems more "normal" as I here count 41 Tornado IDS bombers along with 6 IDS trainers.

AG 51 at Schleswig-Jagel currently has 36 IDS bombers as well as 7 IDS trainers making it a 43-strong Tornado unit. Maybe some of those AG 51 machines will transfer to Nörvenich and JBG 31 now that 2. Staffel at Jagel has disbanded on the Tornado?!?!

Any help and clarification in this matter is highly welcome.

Many thanks and greetings,

Henrik.

During a visit earlier this year at Norvenich I was told they are drastically reducing their fleet. By December this year they will have 18 Tornado's and (hopefully) 4 Eurofighters, so 26 now could be true. Only one Staffel is still active. After Norvenich, Buchel is the next to convert to the Eurofighter.

Hello Dirk,

Thank You for Your useful reply!! It makes sense with only one Staffel operational at Nörvenich in regard to the rather small number of Tornadoes compared to a two-squadron Wing.

I am actually very surprised to hear that they are expected to receive Eufies this December already!! Do You have a time-frame for the conversion at Büchel - I am planning to go there sometime next summer to catch their Tornadies before it is all too late.

Thanks again - also thanks for moving my question to the right sub-forum

Many greetings,

Henrik.

The original plan was to deliver the Eurofighters to Norvenich between 2008 and 2010, but due to the Austrian Eurofighter order they are actually behind on schedule! I am not sure about the schedule for Buchel, but Norvenich will receive another 5-6 Eurofighters in 2010 and will eventually operate 35 of them so it might take a little while..

I really would like to pay a visit this month, in order to 'score' some final JBG31 Tornado's. Does anyone have update information on what I might expect to see?

Thanks in advance,
Rob

Not much...
Yesterday I was ther and they were only flying in the morning. Normally you can expect 1-2 rounds with 1-3jets. It's really not much
