1970s Mil Collection

As I scan my older material I will from time to time post images here according to decade. Please feel free to add your own shots of operational aircraft taken in the same time frame.

I was hosting a photo tour of three New England area bases when I took this Thunderchief shot at Barnes ANGB (KBAF) at Westfield, MA on 15 August 1975
The F-105B is from the 141 TFS NJ ANG at McGuire AFB, NJ

Was the Thunderchief also one of the Century Fighters?

Century means 100. So the F-100, F-101, F-104, F-105 and F-106 are called the century-series. More info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Century_Series.

F-100D 55-2879 131TFS/104TFG MA ANG at Barnes Muni AP, MA (KBAF) on 18 May 1974. This aircraft was built as a block-50NH, but by the time this photo was taken it had likely changed. For several years this unit flew the Super Sabre as you see here, with no markings. Taxying for takoff rwy #02. It will be streaking directly over my house in about 90 secs, but in clean configuration it will likely be in military power, not A/B.

You just missed the F-102.
Strictly spoken even the F-107 belongs to the Century-series, but considering the fact that it never came into production, I assume it is okay not to include it.
Some even consider the F-4 (=F-110) to be a century-series aircraft, although I personally disagree.

Hmm, seeing these pics, I just thought of the sound of the F-100. Does anyone happen to have a soundfile of the afterburner of a Super Sabre? KABOOOMMMMM!!!!!!!

Tonno1970, I'll post color slides as well as B&W negs

Gerard-and what of the F-111? Regarding the J-57 afterburner, in the F-100 photo above we see the later type, which I believe came from retired F-102 aircraft. On Youtube you can find recent video with sound of the Indiana-based warbird F-100F.

Javindo50-Love your shots! The F-104 taxying on the bricks was unusual, but then there's the Vigilante. What can I say about this elegant warplane? Well, I guess I can say it was the last thoroughbred from the famed North American Aviation stable. Oh, my guess is the Thunderbirds Thunderstreaks (Hah!) were from the 1950s....?

Sweet little Mirage, Rob. So clean, so new then.

Late afternoon shot of TC-121C 51-3840 of the 551st AEW&CW at Otis AFB, MA landing rwy #05 at Westover AFB, MA 1 March 1965. I can still recall the sound of those big engines idled back on approach. I guess in another year or so there will be a new Connie flying in Europe, the Lufthansa (1649..?) that has been sitting in the State of Maine for years. I think it is wonderful what the Lufthansa (and other) volunteers are doing to get her airborne again.
