Can't help you on the travel pod vs fuel tank question. But my guess is the intake covers were carried in the nose compartment. The A-37 has a big nose, but no radar. On the right hand sight it did have a big gun, but most of the nose is actually pretty much empty. I couldn't find a picture of the left compartment open, but here is one of the right. As you can see, enough room to put stuff like those engine covers. Also, I think it could easily be used for personal gear of the pilots, so I wonder if they ever really needed a travel pod.

Excellent, Irwin! I forgot about the nose storage compartment. I'll bet they fit right in there. There may be some locking mechanism in there to keep them from bumping around, too.

Say, I noticed that photo was not from the 70s. I had better make an attempt to get us back to that decade. This one may help.

Hans, great shot. Back in the days when each squadron had its own tail-code, I believe.

(quality so-so)

El Uotia gunnery-range was a 23,000-acre area, 75 miles from Wheelus.
This bombing range had the shape of two spoons lying parallel north to south but with their heads at opposite ends.
This separation of target areas means that two aircraft could use the range at the same time.
