Farewell Soesterberg (1 year ago)

Post by Pony02 »

To remember the farewell "party" held on Soesterberg Air Force Base on Nov. the 12th 2008:

1. Image

Dutch Hunter roling via the rwy 13/31, or the Queens as it was called, towards runway 09/27.

2. Image

Because Soesterberg housed a USAFE squadron till 1994 (the 32nd FS "Wolfhound"), operating the impressive F-15, two Eagles from the Lakenheath based 493rd Sqn where invited. Here the number two, freshly painted 84-0014/LN, touches down on runway 27 in the beginning of the afternoon.

3.Image

After landing the pair of Eagles taxied via the November track (north western track between the rwy 09/27 and 13/31) and the Queens to their parking spot on the 300 platform. Here F-15C 84-0027/LN, being the commanders bird from "the Grimreapers", enters the 300 platform via the C2 intersection.

4.Image

On request from ATC the F-15's left Soesterberg by the end of the day from runway 09, "32nd FS Scramble style" (whenever the 32nd FS had to perform a Scramble, two F-15's taxied out from their Zulu hangar situated on the southwestern part of the base, to depart in a few minutes from runway 09, keeping the aircraft low above the runway till the end to perform a high speed 'on the tail' climb).

Very nice visitor was this Greek Air Force F-4E Phantom II. It was invited because the 32nd TFS flew several years with the F-4E as well (before being replaced by the F-15). After the farewell party it had some technical problems and also the weather did not coöperated, leaving the F-4 on Soesterberg a few days longer than planned. Fortunately on Monday Nov.the 17th there where perfectly VFR conditions (10+, clear blue skies) and around 10.30lt. the Phantom taxied from the cargo platform via the runway towards the beginning of the 09'er.

Last take off ever from a conventional aircraft from runway 09/27 on Soesterberg! After this the Phantom made two low passes above the airfield from west to east, to leave via Italy back to Greece.

Damn, the departure of those Eagle's brought back some good old memories...

It's still very very sad :'(
