just came back from a fantastic "Tuesday Axalp 2013" Training day.
The weather was until 2 o'clock in the afternoon quite nice - so I caught some
nice footage from several jet aircraft flying displays during shooting maneuvers.
Quite fantastic was the huge humidity in the air - while almost all of the jet planes
disappeared in a kind of strange cloud of fog.
I just came across this video and thought it could be of interest.
In the early 50s, work started to transform Wellington's little airstrip into a proper international airport and in 1959 New Zealand's capital celebrated the opening of its airport with an airshow.
Among the participants were a contingent of RAF and USAF aircraft, including a F-100 Super Sabre, (R)F-101 Voodoo, (R)B-66 Destroyer and three Vulcans. As Wellington has a rather short runway, these aircraft operated out of Ohakea Air Base.
As part of the show, one of the Vulcans was to make a landing at the short runway. To do so, the Vulcan had to touch down at the very outer marker so that it could use the full length of the runway. The aircraft touched down too early, slamming its landing gear into the embankment and the display nearly ended in a massive fireball.
