I am also going friday, but unfortunately not to the spottersday. And yes, you can make good pictures outside the fence.
Gendarmerie is always a surprise. If they come ( and i think on this day they will...): stay friendly and polite: we are free, they are working...

viewing points: look at this site! ("where to go?") Normally, the aircraft arrive thursday/friday before the open day. Outside the base, You can expect visit from the Gendarmerie. Both Cambrai and Reims have good spotting conditions, look on this site for the best info! Gendarmerie of both bases come to pay you a visit: look at your passport and car papers, and ask if you are taking pictures..... I have been on both bases the last years and alos for two weeks, and i never had...
