Soviet Aircraft designations

Post by corran »

I found that Stefan is changing in my articles (about Polish Air Force) designations of Ilyushin Il-(number here) aircrafts into IL-(number here) witch is wrong.

This two or three letter designations (like Su, Mi, Ka, Yak, An etc.) comes from the names of aircraft constructors (the MiG is an exception - it comes from two names) and if Il should be changed to IL the same thing should be done with all other designations (SU, MI, KA, YAK, AN etc).

So I want to clear that ting, how in your opinion the Ilyushin aircrafts should be designed and why?

And by the way - Wikipedia is using the proper (Il) designation.
Corran,

We prefer to call the Ilyushin IL-12, IL-14 etc instead of il-12, il-14 etc. By using IL we can minimise the differences with the Scramble standards.
And who is "we" that Stefan is talking abut.

Hi Corran,

"We" is the Scramble editorial team, of which Stefan is also a member.

And yes, "we" are fully aware the designation IL is not official, but Il is.
But for various reasons "we" prefer using the IL-designation anyway in all publications we produce; the magazine as well as the website.

Therefore we would like everybody to use the IL designation also on the Wiki -to standardize as much as possible on this website-, as already explained on the page about naming conventions.

Sincere regards,

So you know that IL is wrong but you going to use it anyway because it looks better?

 Bye, I'm out of here.

Hi Corran,

I'm sorry you feel that way because I really liked your contributions.

The IL-convention was introduced at the Scramble editorial team many years ago, for reasons which were very valid back then. And to keep in sync with those (internal) convention, we set the naming conventions the same.

But, as was already written on the page on naming conventions;
It is important to note that these are conventions, not rules written in stone. As Scramble's Aviation Wiki will grow and change, probably those conventions, which were drawn up when this Wiki was initiated, may become outdated or prove to be not as clear as intended.
So when you disagree with a particular convention, the idea is you start a discussion on the subject (on this message board), and see you get enough allies to get the convention changed.
But as long as there is no agreement, we hope people stick to the current convention -just to keep everything alike- and we (the moderators) change any deviations until the convention is changed, at which point we change everything to that new convention.

Just walking away is the easy way out I think....

Sincere regards,

Hans

Sorry but I'm not that kind of person - i want to spent my time on something valuable (like adding some interesting materials to wiki) not on arguing.

And it is a bit annoying that someone that has no real contributions in wiki:

http://www.scramble.nl/wiki/index.php?t ... ons/Stefan" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

is changing my articles because he knows better. Maybe if he knows everything better he should write this article.

For example:
in wiki you ave article about:
General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon (earlier name)
not about
Lockheed Martin F-16 Fighting Falcon

ok so i article about Israeli Air Force to name AH-64 I have used name
Hughes AH-64 Apache (earlier name - same was used in wikipedia)
but Stefan has changed it to
McDonnell Douglas AH-64 Apache

why?

And las thing - for Gods Sake do not change designations of polish aircrafts I have used in my articles - it is PZL-130 Orlik, not PZL 130 Orlik, ok?

And go back to IL:

Aircrafts used by PAF were named Ił-(something) - transcryption from cyrlic letters. You have no ł letter so it should be Il, yes I know that it look symilar to II or ll but his is forum and wiki for people tha know something about aviation - not for total dumbsters.
