Sigma 120-300 f2.8

Post by Leeuwarden »

Zijn er hier ook mensen die deze lens gebruiken? Wat zijn jullie ervaringen met het gebruik van deze lens met of zonder converter?

Needs to re-focus after zooming in or out. Great fot fixed objects, but not for fast moving jets. It is also VERY heavy (2700 gr)

Sold mine and bought its smaller brother the 100-300mm/f4.0 HSM. (very satisfied about the latter !

See: http://www.jetzone2000.com/5_art_lenste ... 0300_1.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Thanks Andries. I have read your review. Do you have any experience with TC's on your 100-300?

I'm using the 100-300 f4 as well. Tried the Sigma 1.4xTC of a friend but it wouldn't fit. Strangely he has the same type of lens and it works fine on his... :confie:

I also use the Sigma 100-300mm f/4.0 in combination with the 1.4x Sigma converter and it is a good combination. I use it on a Nikon D80 camera and it is fast and accurate.

Also the test report at Photozone see: http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/lenses ... /index.htm gives a preference to the 100-300 over the 120-300.

Yes I know, but f2.8 is very atractive... And I've seen results wit a 2x tc that looked very good. (also saw results without tc which looker very good :-) )
I think I'll go to konijnenberg and try one. See how the weight handles...

The only thing that worries me at the moment is thas according to Andries it has to refocus after zooming..

Both the 120-300mm/f2.8 and the 100-300mm/F4.0 are working with the Sigma 1.4x converter. I've used the Sigma 1.4x converter on both, but you will loose some sharpness as could be expected. A 2x converter will work on the 2.8. On the 4.0 you will lose AF unles you have a 5D or 1D-series camera. I woud not recommend a 2x converter on ANY lens.

The re-focussing after zooming issue is for real. Al these lenses have this problem, even on 1D-series cameras. Strangely not a lot of users are willing to admit that their $ 2000 + lens has 'issues'. The lens is great on fixed object, but due to zooming after focusing has cost me a lot of good shots last year. Also the real focal lenght of the lens is about 275mm !

Fortunately I sold it for more than I had bought it for :D, and I'm happy now with the 100-300mm/f4.0. But if you don't need a zoom, then go for the Canon 300m/F4.0 (I still reget selling that one :( )
Kind Regards,

Andries

I think it will be hard using a Canon 300mm on my Nikon D200

Today I will go to Konijnenberg and try the 120-300.

About the refocussing: Wouldn't continue focussing solve that (AF-C)?

Before you go have a look on this website there is a test of the Sigma 100-300 and the 120-300mm.

http://www.photodo.com/category_2.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

You can compare photos they made with these lenses on the same spot, and files are large so you can see every detail.

That can cause a slight problem, I think :? . However I'm sure the Nikon AF-S 300MM/4.0 IF-ED is in the same league.

I'n not familiar with the Nikon AF, but I suppose that AF-C is something like the 'Servo' on the Canon. That did't solve the problem (actual subject did not move), but maybe Nikon can handle this problem better :?:

Let us know wat the results are today at Konijnenberg...
Kind Regards,

Andries

Well... I tried it, took four pictures and returned it to the salesman. Pictures were 3 or 4 stops underexposed so I think the lens was mailfunctioning. My bad luck. I also concluded that it was indeed too heavy for me. Oh well, I had been warned but had to try it myself. Now I know and it is time to move on. I used to have a Nikkor 80-400VR but I never really liked that lens.

So my next options are:

Sigma 80-400 OS which is supposed to be razorsharp at f5.6, 400mm.
One thing I did like on the Nikkor was the VR, so OS is very welcome.

Sigma 100-300 f4. Needs no further introduction I think. No OS however.

Nikkor 70-300 VR. Looks very good from the results I saw this far (see other thread on this forum)

I appreciate your opinion on these lenses or maybe even suggestions I might have overlooked.

I also have a request:
If there is somebody in my neighbourhood using the Sigma 80-400 for Nikon, could I please take some shots with your lens?

(hoi A.).
