Mil Mi-4

Hi,

The newly created Mil Mi-4 article has the following quote;

A number remain in current use (mainly in China as the Z-5), and in recent years conversions have been reported in Soviet use for ASW (“Hound-B”), armed close support and ECM (“Hound-C”).

I'm seriously interested what is meant with recent years, as I think the Mi-4 was phased out of service many moons ago. Also I'm not sure whether the Chinese still use the Z5.

Recent as in: the last 10 to 15 years, as it was very difficult to obtain information about the actual used types before the break up of the Soviet Union. Most of this information only surfaced the last decade, when it was deemed this info was no longer secret, most probably because the type had been phased out long ago.

Chinese Z-5? Yeah, I could be wrong there, but who knows for sure. Most probable user today would however be North Korea. I'll take a look (with Google Earth/Maps )

Oh, and I'll probably update the versions section this weekend, as I have found a very, very reliable source for Mi-4 types. Problem only is, it's in Russian, and I need to translate it first, then rewrite it in "normal" English.

I have just updated the versions section, take a look. It's a bit bigger now, with a lot more info on different versions.

If anyone has details on the designations that are not yet filled in (the ones marked with Mi-4(?) please do not hesitate to add them.

It's indeed a strange statement. ASW and armed versions of the Mi-4 were obviously in service a long time ago, 1960s-ish. I don't think that was unknown to the West at that time and certainly, I have a book much older than ten years which mentions these versions (they're not conversions). It may be difficult to establish the correct designations for these versions, but that doesn't prevent this statement from being wrong.
