I have been to Rhodes last year for a non spotting holiday.
Our hotel was close to the beach at spot 1, this is half way between the airport and Rhodes Town.
The whole period the planes arrived via Rhodos Town, passing our hotel and then landed on the airport.
When we were at the beach the planes came overhead us at about 100/200 meter heading for the airport.
If they had a reg. underneath the wing this was easy to read off without any binoculars.
Small aircraft and Greece ones turned in very early and above sea...these could be seen but not read off.
Spot number 2 is the old airport and is not in use anymore...allthough some military/rescue helicopters could be seen.
Near spot 4 is a bar where you can see the aircraft during take-off or during the roll-out after landing...also A300 A6-PFD is present at that spot:
http://www.airliners.net/open.file/1099976/M/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Number 3 is the road next to the runway which you can follow without any problems...this is a public road from spot 4 to the platfrom.
At spot 5 the aircraft lined up for take-off could be seen..at least during our stay.
Because this was a non spotting holiday we only visited the airport once for a hour or something...a binocular was no problems...no camera or radio used so no info about the use of that.
Thanks airliners.net for the use of the picture.

Hello,

some years ago a friend get arrested by the Police. He taken no Picture!
He just look with his Camera to the Planes on the Airport.
After an hour, the Police Chief had no time for the Spotter...so he can leave the Police station.

Last year an other Spotterfriend flying with Condor from HAJ/EDDV to Heraklion. Short befor landing in Heraklion the Pilot say to the Passagers that no Aerial photos are allowed

There is a big difference in Greece when an airport is also used by the militairy.

I was in 1997 at Rhodos for a none spottingtrip. However, the business at the airport on Sunday "forced" me to get some pics on that day. On Saturday I went to the airport-policestation and ask permission for taking pictures the next day. The chief of police said it was no problem.

However, the early next morning after an hour spotting I was arrested. Although I claimed that I had permission, the policeman didn't take notice of that. I got handcuffs on, he pushed me in the car, got my stuff and threated it as evidence. Than he drove me to the airport-policestation. I spend 2 hours there. A two hour interrogation. They threated me like a spy.
Lucky I could convince them that spotting is just an hobby like others. And I could prove that I was there the day before to ask permission, because one of the policemen regconized me.

You need a proper permission of the airport authorities ON PAPER. They allowe you to take pics, and there will be no troubles with the cops.

Take care.

I guess not. However, some cops will get "nervous" see you writing things on an airport.
My experience is 10 years old, folks. So don't get to nervous when you going to Greece. But to make sure you stay out of trouble, get yourself a written permission by an official authorithy. The problem at Rhodos is that there's a militairy camp just close to the airport to the east.

I read different logs of people spotting and photographing at Rhodos. But they didn't notify if they ask permission. If not, you can be lucky that no one noticed you hanging around. In my case some "locals" called the police when seeing me taking pictures of airplanes near the taxitrack!

I hate to see my spottingcolleagues ending in a Greek prison!!

Take care folks.

Hi,
Just got back from Rhodes. Thanks all for your reply’s they where a great help, especially the map from gatso76.
Here’s some info from me:
First a warning, making pictures in Greece of an airport is not allowed (civil or military) even the travel agency warned us for this.
Travelled with ArkeFly (going Surinam 743 and back Air Finland 757 ?????) and stayed in an apartment in Trianta bay with great spotting opportunities (pictures, 300 mm lens, and numbers) straight from my room, as the aircraft pass there on finals about 1500 feet high. The United Arab Emirates A6-PFD that overran the runway a couple of years ago is still lying there and is becoming sort of a tourist attraction, best thing to do if you want to make pictures of it is to get a cup of Greek coffee in the cafe next to the plane, they won’t give you problems than (most probably). A good place to make pictures of the old airport (Rhodes-Maritsa)(Military !) is on top of the cross on the mountain Filerimos (needs a good lens and clear weather). From this place you can also see the beginning of the runway (07/25) of the new airport (Diagoras). The new airport looked rather disorganised when we arrived and departed, but that’s the Greek way of life I guess so be prepared for that!
All and all a great place for holiday’s, sun, beach and a bit of spotting.
And remember be careful when you’re out there!

Greetings,
Mzunguwamap

I'm sorry but this is false.

There are two kinds of airports in Greece. The ones under HCAA rules of operation and the ones under HAF.
In the first kind photography is allowed. It is legal. It is not prohibited. You can take pictures. Even if military aircraft land every now and then.
In the second kind of airfields, photography or noting down serial - tail numbers is not allowed. Forbidden. No-no. Bad. Even if you are trying to take a picture of the airliner you flew in.

Also take a look here: http://www.air-born.gr/index_en.html and the "planespotting" section of the site.

Very clear Kostas, thanks. Travel agencies, like many other organisations, try to 'play it safe' by saying it is all forbidden. This may work for many clients but it creates confusion for the more inquisitive ones. Your explanation is what we need.

Youre most probably right, I just wanted to tell the people who want to go there to be carefull when making pictures at airports (as the travel agency warned us). Just imagine you have to explain to a greek policeman who want's to arrest you what HCAA rules of operation and the ones under HAF are (in Greek)(don't even know myself what it means), see what happened to Southern Pride
Anyway thanks for the information so people can make their own choice.
(nice site by the way  )

greetings.

Spotting Rhodos

Post by robgotte »

Hi all
I am just back from a two week holliday on Rhodos (RHO).
I think the best spottingplace is at number 5 on the map.
At the beginning of the runway 25 just before the trafficlights from the
mainroad to rodos faliraki.
between the last two houses/shops jou have a very close view at the line up and start and landing almost the whole day shadow.
Thursday saturday are the busiest.
Sometimes there are nice bisjets.
Greetings
Rob.
