Slide Scans !

Post by dinovandoorn »

Maybe it is a good idea to start a topic where you can drop all kind of slide scans ( past and present ).
Just to prevent that we need to create a lot more " tribute to... " topic's :D
Make sure that the quality is more than reasonable before dropping every shot here.
I hope to see a wide range of pictures here...

I will kick-off with some scans created with my canoscan.

Lovely shots Dino. I would give it a try with this A-4C C-324.

Dino, I absolutely like the idea. However, long after giving up on participating in every nice topic here, I even gave up on viewing every photo topic. It simply takes too much of my time. This is a topic I would like to contribute to, especially as I plan to make slides for possibly ten more years, but I know I will hardly make time for it...

Let me just drop a random, relatively recent scan: Gainesville, TX, oct06.

VERY tasty selection.

Same goes for Dino's pics, very hot selection and superbly processed scans.

Totally agree with you. But what i want to know, which scanner did all of you use? the pictures shown here are of good quality, and the type of scanner is part of it. Next to some experience with PS

It depends on several other factors aswell, such as the quality of the analog camera + lens which was used, the quality of the film which was used. Because there is a big difference between Hema/Dixons own brand and Afga slides or even better Kodachrome 64 or Fuji Sensia 100 for example.
And last but not the least the state that the slides are in currently, has also alot to do with the way it was stored (dust, fingerprintmarks, scratches, discolouration, etc.) and aswell again the originaly film quality/brand of course.
If all of the above are "state of the art" then I would recommend an expensive and "state of the art" scanner aswell... otherwise it's of no use... and more or less just "een vlag op een modderschuit" as we would call it in Dutch.

I'm also very impressed by these photo's (apart from the very juicy subjects) and am wondering if the smaller size causes the pictures to look less grainy and sharp or is it really the quality of the scanner & film. Could any of you post a bigger sample maybe?

Me thinks about running to the shop and buy one myself too... :-p:

Hello,
I use a, I think 10 years old, Acer ScanWit 2720S slidescanner, the scan is 3720 x 2550 and between 5 - 12 Mb. and use PS CS2
I crop/resize the scan to 15 x 10cm with 300pixels/inch then NoiseNinja, shadow/highlight - curve & color balance, dust & scratch I remove with clone stamp after that some smart sharp
and a resize to 1020 x 680, last is save for web, fit on screen quality approx 300kb.

some former European glory. Everything was taken with the Ricoh XR20SP and (pretty crappy) Tokina 80-200 zoom that I bought from my first holiday job:
