Well, nowadays it seems like every spotter should have a website, just because it´s necessary, even people with no knowledge about web design at all. :?

At least it´s a confirmation that your site design is pretty okay...

It shows how some do not even have the courtesy to ask if they may use a layout or a design.
Just take it and call it your own without permission sad.

Does not show much creativity from their side.

Just give them a notice that they are not allowed to use the design and if no reply send your complaint to the abuse of their provider.

So people with no knowledge of website building are not allowed to have their own website ?

Sorry for x-posting this one:

Who cares Crizz! I must say that both your sites look a lot like ours (afterburner.nl) and that one lingers around way longer than both of yours together... I just take it as a compliment, that you like the set up the way we did Cheer up, it is all about showing the content, which is absolutely yours (I asume).

Cheers, Mo.

Nowadays alot of templates can be downloaded for free and can be edited in any way you like without having to mention the original designer. I made my website with a template like that and altered it the way I liked it and also tried to have my own style. By designing my own logo, which makes your site recognisable for others.

The style for Afterburner.nl, Planespotters.nl or Aimhigh.nl is similar, but each has its own touch.

I'm sure there are more sites that have a similar layout like mine, maybe even ones that are about airshow photography. I'm not saying that your site was made using such a template.

One big advantage of designing your own website from scratch is, that in case of big problems you know where to look and what to search for. My layout isnt perfect by far, I still have some problems with it.

To make a long story short, Chris it can be annoying, but it happens alot. There are more aviation related sites that are very different to yours, but where i've seen more similar layouts about the same subject. Especially Joomla designed sites make this very obvious.

Most important for me on sites about aviation photography are the photos and a clear navigation to them, and your photos are great, especially being photos not everybody can or will take.

(Tried to make a long story short ;-) )

All,
Crizz wrote:This is pure copyright violation!
Sorry, but I have to disagree with you on this; as far as I am aware, you can not copyright the general layout of a website, so you can't violate it either...
This probably would mean the end of websites in general, as there always will be another site which looks like yours and was on the net before it.

Although I am inclined towards the idea this is not the case here (see below).

That is a different story, but you can say this of (probably) 99% of all personal websites.

I wish.. ;-)
But more seriously, I agree with DJdeRidder as I think there are a lot of websites around, which just give the impression they were made because somebody has a large enough ego he (she) thought that a personal website was absolutely necessary. Usually those sites don't attract too many visitors though (after the first week that is, when dad, mam, little sis and grandpa have expressed their obligatorily oohs and aahs ;-) )
But anyway, some basic knowledge of web design (both the technical side as well as pure lay out) would be advisable when you want to create your own website (or just hire that freaky kid next door who does have this knowledge).

And yours probably looks like a million other sites, some of which were already on the net years before you started developing afterburner.nl.
But I agree with you the content is more important then the looks, although putting some extra effort in the layout, making it really your own distinct site, just might do the trick to have it stand out among all the other websites with similar content.

I guess both Planespotters.nl and Aimhigh.nl just happen to use the same template; I can hardly imagine -looking at the source- that they themselves came up with "template like" classes like 'veranda131', 'veranda13_black' and so on; anybody developing their own site would use much more personal "invented" names in their style sheets.
In general, comparing both sources, my best bet would be that both sites started with the same template, but there is enough "evidence" in there planespotters.nl did not just copy aimhigh.nl (the different versions (implementations) of the script for the slideshows for starters).

As a side note; my first impression after looking at the sources of afterburner.nl is it looks like it was created from scratch :worship:

I couldn't agree more!

but still, if u "design" something, you'd want it to stand out I'd say... the moment I would find out an older site in the similar group (planespotting) was so identical, I would change it to be "uniqueish"....

Hi,
Polecat wrote:but still, if u "design" something, you'd want it to stand out I'd say... the moment I would find out an older site in the similar group (planespotting) was so identical, I would change it to be "uniqueish"....
Absolutely!

But I guess I have to revert my statement I thought planespotters.nl was not a copy  ; when looking at the "logs" pages of both sites (didn't look at those the first time), there looks to be enough similarity which points towards an -adjusted- copy of aimhigh, like the style-class "arial11_red", which only happens to give a yellow output, instead of red, at planespotters....
Just for fun (I'm getting intriged here  ) I'll check some other pages too.
But then again, even though there might be some copying; everybody who builds websites copies stuff from other people (with the likely exeption of Tim Berners-Lee on his first pages ;-) ). At what point you start calling it "stealing"....

What I couldn't find (yet) is the tracker code Crizz mentions in the other thread as part of his proof :?:

Talking of which;
@ the moderators; two threads about the same issue is a bit overdone I think. And even though I participate in this discussion, actually I feel this does not belong on this forum, Crizz and Sander should settle this in private. But hey, as long as it is not locked, I'll express my thoughts here

And @ Polecat; You're on a mission of God too ?

Anyway, I guess both sites have had more visitors than usual today !

All,

The original thread in Your Website has now been locked.

I'm not going to discuss what I think about who is right and who is wrong, but be advised that although I'll allow this discussion here for the time being, I personally think the Scramble Message Board is not the place to discuss whether Planespotters copied from Aimhigh or not, and as such I will not hesitate to ban any users without prior notice when the name calling really starts - and some of the previous postings are already on the edge!

Not so kind regards,

Hans
