The bomb bay is open on this Vulcan B.2 of 44 Sqdn for a reason. On the inside of the doors, written in bright red dayglo, are the words "Happy Birthday", making XM611 the only non-American aircraft I know of to have a U.S. Bicentennial inscription applied.

Bad weather that day, but who would pass up this shot?

There has to be a reason they called the TF-102A "the Tub" in service, and I don't think it was because it was sleek and appealing. That's OK, they sure were different!

I noticed the T-33 M-54 had chaff dispensers underwing. In the States most FIS units had a few T-Birds (T-33s) with chaff dispensers like that. They would sit up there at about FL350 boring holes in the sky and, I assume, intermittantly pumping out chaff with the unit's fighters in pusuit. It went on day and night. I was at the end of the runway once right under a T-33 from the 76th FIS on final and a big puff of chaff came out and drifted down. It surprised me how fine the metal strands were. Perhaps there were different types of chaff then.

I'll go over to the tactical side with this one

This is the 8th production F-100C, built as an F-100C-1NA. 53-1716 was operated 119TFS/177TFG NJ ANG. Normally located at Atlantic City, the unit was operating from McGuire AFB, NJ. at the time of this photo on 23 June 1965. New Jersey's 141 TFS was just beginning to work up on F-105Bs then at McGuire, and the New Jersey's 150 ATS(H) with C-121Cs was also there. This may perhaps be the only time in Air Guard history that three squadrons were operating from the same CONUS base without being under federalized status. I'll include shots of the other two units as we proceed here.

Switching to the Navy for a moment
F-8J Crusader VF-211 at NAS Willow Grove, PA 14 September 1974. Either this was the squadron's "Airshow Bird" or they weren't firing the 20mm cannons much. Sure looks pretty.


And now to the USMC.
The pilot of this jet must have had a real concern about FOD. Large pieces of heavy paper were taped over the engine intakes. Maybe he had a bad experience after an airshow.

And we can't forget the Coast Guard
It's hard to imagine the Coast Guard went from flying Grumman HU-16E amphibians to the Dassault Falcon business jet, but they did. This, in case you didn't know, is one of the former types at USCG Station Cape Cod on 5 October 1974.
