First Four UH-60Ms for Sweden Delivered

In a ceremony at Sikorsky's facility in Stratford, Connecticut, on November 17, the fourth UH-60M for the Swedish Armed Forces was handed over.

One of the new production UH-60M Black Hawks for the Swedish Air Force awaits delivery. Sikorsky

IN A ceremony on November 17 in Stratford, Connecticut, Sikorsky Aircraft delivered the fourth of 15 UH-60M Black Hawk helicopters to the US Army, for onward transfer to the Swedish Defence Material Administration (FMV).

Sikorsky is building and delivering all 15 UH-60Ms to an accelerated 18-month production schedule that began when the formal contract for them was awarded on May 25, 2011.

The first was handed-over to the US Army in September and the company is on schedule to complete delivery of the first seven in December 2011.

The remaining eight will follow by autumn 2012.

The FMV is procuring the helicopters through the US Government’s Foreign Military Sales programme.

The accelerated build schedule will enable the Swedish Armed Forces to deploy three UH-60M aircraft to Afghanistan in April, 2013 for medical evacuation, utility, and search and rescue missions.

Sweden’s aircraft are equipped with an advanced flight control system to reduce pilot workload, full night vision device capability and a state-of-the-art communications suite.

The US Army will further modify the aircraft before delivery with a variety of equipment, including an exterior rescue hoist, gunner seats, armored floor, stackable litters, a cockpit heater and an environmental control system.

Swedish aircrew — already flight qualified in UH-60Ms at the US Army Aviation Center, Fort Rucker, Alabama — will receive follow on unit training at the Swedish Air Force base in Linköping following the arrival of the first four unmodified aircraft in Sweden in early 2012.

Sikorsky Aerospace Services and Swedish defense and security company Saab will provide maintainer training and long-term logistics support for the fleet.

Is there some info yet about the c/n and serial tie-up of the 15 ordered Swedish UH-60M's / Hkp16's ?
Shown [FY?]-27227 is the US Army pre-delivery serial of 161326/02 for Försvarsmaktens Helikopterflottilj / 2.Hkpskv.

Br,
Robert

Black Hawks arrive in Sweden
21 December 2011 - 12:11 by Tony Osborne in London

The first two of 15 UH-60M Black Hawks ordered by the Swedish Armed Forces have been delivered just 18 months after the aircraft were ordered.

The aircraft were flown to the Swedish Defence Material Administration's (FMV's) facility at Linköping on 19 December on board a USAF C-17.

The FMV will now prepare the aircraft for entry into service and eventually operations in Afghanistan where they are expected be deployed by the second quarter of 2013.

Project managers involved in the programme believe the procurement of the Black Hawks, known in Sweden as the Hkp 16, maybe a world record in military helicopter procurement.

PICTURES: Swedish military gets first Black Hawk helicopters

Sweden's first of 15 Sikorsky UH-60M Black Hawk utility helicopters have been officially transferred to the nation's armed forces, ahead of the type's deployment to Afghanistan next year.

Pictured during a handover ceremony at Malmen air base on 17 January, the new aircraft will have the national designation HKP 16, and be flown by the Swedish Defence Forces Helicopter Wing.

Operations in Afghanistan will commence during 2013, with the Black Hawks to replace Eurocopter AS332 Cougars in supporting Stockholm's contribution to the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force.

Sweden is acquiring its UH-60Ms under an accelerated Foreign Military Sales deal signed with the USA last year.

So are these Blackhawks "purchased" to be used long term? Or are they stricktly for Afghan ops and the Swedes will get rid of them once they finish in A-Stan?

Sweden– UH-60M BLACKHAWK Helicopters
WASHINGTON, September 30, 2010 – The Defense Security Cooperation Agency notified Congress Sept. 29 of a possible Foreign Military Sale to Sweden of 15 UH-60M BLACKHAWK Helicopters and associated parts, equipment and logistical support for a complete package worth approximately $546 million.
The Government of Sweden has requested a possible sale of 15 UH-60M BLACKHAWK Helicopters, 34 T700-GE-701D General Electric Engines (30 installed and 4 spares), 15 AN/AAR-57(V)3 Common Missile Warning Systems, AN/APR-39 Radar Signal Detecting Sets, AN/AVR-2B Laser Warning Sets, Aviation Mission Planning Station, transportable operations simulator, communications equipment, spare and repair parts, tools and support equipment, publications and technical documentation, personnel training and training equipment, U.S. Government and contractor engineering, logistics, and technical support services, and other related elements of logistics support. The estimated cost is $546M.
This proposed sale will contribute to the foreign policy and national security of the United States by helping to improve the security of a friendly country, which has been, and continues to be an important force for political stability and economic progress in Europe. Swedish forces are currently deployed in support of coalition efforts in Afghanistan. This sale will enable the Swedish Forces to address an urgent shortfall in Combat Search and Rescue and Medical Evacuation transport capability while in the area of operations.
Sweden’s acquisition of these helicopters is consistent with recently adopted defense and modernization priorities focused on both international threats to Swedish security as well as regional threats to Swedish sovereignty. This proposed sale will contribute to Sweden’s need to expand its existing army architecture to rapidly deploy forces to counter territorial threats, or in support of coalition efforts in Afghanistan. The purchase of UH-60M BLACKHAWK Helicopters will contribute to Sweden’s goal to update its capability while enhancing interoperability between Sweden, the U.S., and other allies.
The proposed sale of this equipment and support will not alter the basic military balance in the region.
The prime contractors will be Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation in Stratford, Connecticut; and General Electric Aircraft Company in Lynn, Massachusetts. There are no known offset agreements proposed in connection with this potential sale.
Implementation of this proposed sale will require the assignment of at least two contractor representatives to Sweden for a period of two years.
There will be no adverse impact on U.S. defense readiness as a result of this proposed sale.
This notice of a potential sale is required by law and does not mean the sale has been concluded.

Stefan,
Thank you for the reply - however it still does not answer my question.
Are the UH60M's a short term solution to the A-stan CSAR problem or will they be returned and used in Sweden?
Sorry if i am being repetative - i'm just trying to figure out this purchase.

This may clarify some things...

Saab
18 Jan, 2012

The defence and security company Saab has signed a major support agreement with Sikorsky Aerospace Services regarding technical maintenance and support for Sweden’s BLACK HAWK helicopters.

Saab will establish a maintenance organisation, supported by Sikorsky Aerospace Maintenance personnel, for HKP 16 comprising helicopter technicians and other technical support staff based at Malmslätt in Linköping, Sweden.

The first helicopters were handed over to the Helicopter Wing in Malmslätt yesterday, and at the beginning of next year, all 15 UH-60M BLACK HAWK helicopters designated HKP 16, will be in operational service.

We look forward to a long term partnership with both Sikorsky and the Swedish Armed Forces,” says Lars-Erik Wige, Head of the Support and Services business area at Saab.
