Where do you store photos while travelling?

Post by phkza »

I was just wondering (and planning some new trips): what is de most popular and most efficient way to store your photos while you're travelling?

I myself always have some extra CF-cards, but when you're shooting for a week or more, you're going to run out of space. That's why I carry my laptop, to store pics. But as you know, a laptop can be heavy and/or take up lots of space.

I wonder how the rest of you guys do this. Bring a tablet perhaps? Use storage on the internet like cloud computing? Let's hear it! :)

On travels I always copy the images from the CF card to my small and light netbook (with 250GB storage) in the evenings. Then I quickly browse through them with Breezebrowser Pro and delete the "bad" ones. (Depending on the time I add keywords etc to them.) After that I copy the remaining ones to a small portable harddisk (also 250GB). So I have them on my netbook and a backup on a portable harddisk.

On an image tank (320GB)!
(Mobile HDD with a built-in cardreader, 1 push of the button and all images from the CF are copied to the HDD).

Netbook (320GB) + portable storage device as back-up (80GB). Enough memory cards (CF & SD; dual slot camera) in the bag to last a few days without having to dump!

Same here, a netbook is ideal. It's not much bigger/heavier than a tablet but has a lot of storage space. IMO storage space (that is, the lack of it) is one of the main disadvantages of a tablet.
For back-ups I use USB-sticks instead of portable harddisks.

I have been using an Android tablet lately. It has 40GB of space when one counts the external MicroSD card. It being an Android device it does have USB ports (unlike an iPad) and so it takes a cardreader. All it took was to disable the write protection Android 4.0.3 has for external MicroSD cards. A lot easier to carry around than any notebook with their often huge power bricks.

Notebook (previously was a netbook, because my backpack had no space for a 10 inch one) and then copied onto a 750 Gb external HD. Now I'm looking for an HD for the IPad; I've found the HyperDrive but it doesn't seem to work as I would, so I'm waiting for their new product, Colorspace 2.

I'm using a 10" netbook with a 250GB harddisk and an external 640GB harddisk as well (2,5", USB powered) - and I usually do not keep both in the same place if I can help it.

I also now use an 11" netbook with 500GB capacity now. The tablet method did work in itself, however with only a USB 1.1 connection in the tablet it simply took too long copying a card.

I've got a couple of 32GB and 64GB CF cards (plus some smaller ones) and have not yet run out of space on these. My laptop is a bit on the heavy side (17 inch Powerbook) so not ideal for taking with on a trip by airliner. When I travel by car the weight isn't an issue, so then it will just tag along.
