Zeljava AB (former Yugoslav Air Base) - 20-07-2014

Post by r.e.hendriks »

Hi all,

During my holiday in Croatia I visited the former Yugoslav Air Base Zeljava, which is close to the famous Plitvice lakes.
This abandoned air base had five runways and a big tunnel complex inside the mountains.

Here are some shots I took there. An article with more photo's and historical information can be found at my website:

Indeed an awesome experience.

When we arrived at the middle of the base we saw some locals and two police men and asked whether it was save.
As long as you follow the signs, and don't enter the hangars it is all save. Just stay on the paved roads.

Best regards Rob

I knew the bunker complex was rather dangerous to enter because of those mines, but if you not only have to contend with landslides but also highly explosive gases...

Yep, that's what the article said.

Landmines are mostly outside in the bushes. The bunker complex is very dangerous as it can easily collapse when you walk inside.
Also very high explosive gases inside, but also very toxic gases. Without protection the chance to suddenly pass out is very high.
So, if someone ever visits this airbase. Stay on the paved road/tracks, follow the mine signs and don't enter the bunker complex!!

Take care, Rob.

Knew about this base, and read multiple artikels about it before.
But still I am flabbergasted each time this subject is brought to attention !
Still on my wish list !

Thanks for the beautifull report

Thanks for your report.

Looks like some gardening work has to be done to get a decent shot of the DC-3.

Yeah Rob, putting yourself in harms way, well done, anything for the numbers :respect:
Cutbacks, cutbacks, cutbacks, it's just so hard to get the gardening staff these days.

Camera, check: Binos, check: Stepladder, check: Secateurs, oops!

Rob, can you see the ID of the T-33 dumped in the bushes?

And did you also find the second T-bird which was somewhere at the base in the past?

Both were F-84's.....

This one is 10686 (c/n 3150-2111B)
Image

And this one is 10531 (c/n 3350-2272B)
Image

But as you can see, it is hardly possible to see them or take pictures of.

Both shots taken from the report on my website: http://www.fly-by.nl

Best regards, Rob.

Where was that Israeli Phantom pictured :?:

Indeed, the photographer didn't have secateurs/Pruning Shears/een snoeischaar with him...
But it looks like both in Israel and at Zeljava a mechanically-powered chain saw may have been handy...
