This is the forum to share your recent aviation photos with the rest of the community, being photos not older than six months at the moment of topic opening. Theme-based topics, not about recent events, should go into the sub-forum. Although we will not screen beforehand, we reserve the right to delete any images, especially if clearly unsharp or otherwise low in quality. For more information on how to upload you images, check this post. In topic titles, please use airfield names in stead of just codes, and be clear about what kind of photos your viewers can expect (e.g. CIV/MIL, location etc.). Simultaneously, do not feel offended by criticism per se, but simply explain your motives, taste et cetera, or ignore if you wish so. |
TLP April foolsday
Nice weather took me to Florennes last week on April foolsday. Eastern winds gave a great chance of shooting during takeoffs and landings. Here are some of the results. Hope you enjoy them.
Grtz,
Hans
All takeoff shots were taken with 500mm lens +1.4 ext.
1
All landingshots were taken with a 500mm lens.

Re: TLP April foolsday
What's your trick to make those pictures that very, very, sharp?
I use a Nikon D200, with a Sigma 50-500mm, I take pictures in RAW format but I keep getting very unsatisfactory pictures, majority not even sharp.
I used all the tricks from a large number of books, and tried most tips and tricks that have ever been mentioned on this forum but alas.......

Hans is using a (Canon) prime lens 500/f4. This is an extremely nice and sharp lens, which your 50-500 (with all respect!) can nowhere approach. Other than that, of course with this focal length, it is of most importance to have a very very steady hand. That too can make the difference. Just my two cents.
Cheers, Maurice.
BTW Hans, I forgot: very nice set of pictures!!

Re: TLP April foolsday
I know these extreme tele-/zoomlenses tend to cause a considerable quality reduction, especially compared with prime lenses, but still, I do see many fellow spotters using the same Sigma 50-500 but also their pictures are more crisp then mine....Maurice wrote:Hans is using a (Canon) prime lens 500/f4. I am aware we're going off topic here, but my next goal would be to by a prime lens myself, but generally speaking; what would be the best/most suitable option as far as your experience is concerned (I know, every airfield, every location, every wind direction might ask for another option but still) 300mm? 500 mm? 1.4 extender ?? 2.0 extender ??

Re: TLP April foolsday
If budget was no issue, I would definately get myself a 500/f4! I have been using a 300/2.8 for the past 9 years and I am very satified with that one as well. Also in combination with a 1.4x extender, you still get top quality images. In combination with 2x extender, things get worse! I own one but hardly use it.

Re: TLP April foolsday
You know how to handle your equipment Hans, good sharp pictures. Your editing however misses one element: If you change the profile from Adobe RGB to sRGB the images even look better on the internet Some can be a bit brighter as well, use the levels trick

Thanks for all the nice comments. I'm not that familiar with PS. I don't know all the finetuning to really get the maximum out of my pics. All i do is a little bit of sharpening (i use my camera on zerosettings), sometime some cropping and a bit of brightness/contrast. I guess i really have to get into this stuff to optimize the results (so, Iwan please do another photoshop training).
Here is the final set for that day.
Grtz,
Hans

Re: TLP April foolsday
The edges (especially in the first series of pics) look a little jagged. Maybe due to oversharpening or not resizing properly. Other than that nice pics!
