Re: 480.FS relocating.
The relocation of EUCOM from Stuttgart to Mons, Belgium and perhaps also African Command, could possibly also see the increase of movements at Chievres AB.

Part of the news is also that the planned relocation of 100ARW and 352SOW from Mildenhall to Spangdahlem will not take place... still, remaining where they are, they DO move out of the EU..

They don’t
the 52nd Fighter Wing at Spangdahlem to Italy, effectively ending the U.S. mission at the German base. Additionally, the 100th Air Refueling Wing, which flies the KC-135 tanker, and 352nd Special Operations Wing will stay at Mildenhall instead of moving to Spangdahlem as planned.
Ramstein Air Base is unaffected, DOD officials said, and 24,000 personnel will remain in Germany.

It's just Trump big talk. None of this will happen before the next elections in November. This will only happen if Trump gets reelected. Even the folks in the Pentagon aren't on board with these decisions. Let's wait and see what happens here but none of this is happening anytime soon if at all.

Actually, they DO... as they are to remain in Britain, and Britain leaves the EU, so does Mildenhall... duhhh.

‘President Trump called that number last month when he threatened to take troops out of Germany. So now he adds the deed to the word.’

It has been more or less mentioned during Obama time already, but so far not much happened luckily...robv_aviation wrote:It's just Trump big talk. This time, as long as Trump is taking the decisions, it might be a realistic and unfortunate scenario.
On the other hand they claim that relocating units in Europa and to Black Sea regions, will increase the strategic flexibility.
This is just another reason that might turn this relocation into reality...

Re: 480.FS relocating.
Spangdahlem has seen it's wing decrease for over years and years ...
It wouldn't make sense to keep the base open for just a few falcons IMO.
But question remains if the base is to close or will remain open for the AMC mission which it has too.

Re: 480.FS relocating.
think they will move the AMC traffic to nearby Ramstein. And so shut down Spang. Why keep Spang open for just the AMC traffic when the fighters are away. There's no need for that.K-9 wrote:Spangdahlem has seen it's wing decrease for over years and years ...

Re: 480.FS relocating.
The 480th is moving, however the 52nd wing of which it is part is not mentioned.
The 52nd Munitions Maintenance Group is in charge of the special stores in Volkel, KB, Buchel and Ghedi.
Spang is also frequent host to deployments...
There are more tasks besides the 480th, and closure of the airbase has not(yet?) been mentioned.

Re: 480.FS relocating.
Aviano too has nukes - so integrating the 52nd MMG with the 31st FW wouldn’t be a real issue.
And about the closure of Spangdahlem: the total number of troops moving to Belgium and Italy, plus the ones going back to the States, make up for the total headcount... USAF already has a ‘skeleton base’ in Europe (Fairford), I doubt they need another one with facilities in Romania, Bulgaria and Poland at their disposal.
