Dutch Harvard saved

Former Koninklijke Luchtmacht (Royal Netherlands Air Force, KLu) Harvard B-193 has been saved for the future.

In the last 56 years, the Noorduyn built AT-16ND (c/n 14-770) spent its days as gate guard at the camping site ‘Duinrand’ in Burgh-Haamstede, NL. Initially located at ground level, it was placed on a high pedestal at the entrance to the site in 1997.

The eye-catcher was bought by the father of the the current owner of the camping site who wants to change things and so the Harvard had to go.

It was at this stage that Tom van der Meulen became interested. He owns the Heritage Hangar at Oostwold airport which gives room to a fine collection of historic aircraft, of which North American P-51D PH-PSI ‘Damn Yankee’ is the best known.

Others include a Boeing-Stearman PT-13, and a crop sprayer Piper Super Cub. Van der Meulen already owns an airworthy Harvard, PH-KLU.

The ‘new’ Harvard is destined to be eventually be restored as a static exhibit for the Heritage Hangar. But that is the future, for the time being B-193 is stored at Lelystad airport.
