First Apache Guardian delivered to KLu

On 25 October 2022, Boeing Inc. delivered the first AH-64E Apache Guardian to the Koninklijke Luchtmacht (KLu, Royal netherlands Air Force).

The attack helicopter, serial Q-31, is the first of 28 to be delivered to the KLu. In February 2018, the Netherlands decided to upgrade all their AH-64Ds to the latest AH-64E standard via a Foreign Military Sales (FMS) contract with the US. In 2019, the US Department of Defence issued a contract to Boeing to remanufacture 28 KLu AH-64D Apaches to the advanced AH-64E version 6.

In May 2022, Scramble Magazine reported that the first AH-64E Apache Guardian fuselage was noted on the assembly-line at Boeing’s AH-64 manufacturing plant in Mesa (AZ). During the so-called remanufacture, Boeing completely disassembles all AH-64DNs. Components are tested, reused or replaced. Together with many new systems, these are installed on a newly produced hull.

The Apache Guardians will be equipped with the latest state-of–the-art equipment like a new Integrated Self Protection System (ISPS), a new radar, Radar Warning Recievers (RWR), Laser Warning Recievers (LWR), a complete new software system and new Laser-guided – and Hellfire missiles. The modernisation programme is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.

It is expected that the first deliveries will go to the training unit, 302 Squadron, at Fort Hood-Killeen/Robert Gray AAF (TX).
