Middle Wallop Apaches moved to Wattisham

On 11 December 2020, 673 (AHTU) Squadron at Middle Wallop (UK) operating eight Apache AH1 attack helicopters ceased all flying operations. The Apaches left for Wattisham Army Air Corps Field.

The Apache Helicopter Training Unit (AHTU) was part of 7 (Training) Regiment. Its role was to conduct "conversion-to-type" training on the Apache for both newly qualified and experienced Army pilots.

With the first two new AH-64E Apache Guardians (Apache AH2) arriving at Wattisham, the focus will shift to full rate conversion training. If 673 (AHTU) Squadron will be the first training unit to receive the Apache AH2 has not been confirmed yet.

The current inventory of Apache AH1s will be divided over the current 3rd and 4th Regiment squadrons and will eventually be shipped to the Boeing facility in Huntsville (AL) where they will be completely stripped. All items that will see a new future in the AH-64E will be transported to Mesa (AZ), where the new Echo variant is build.
