Thailand officially selects the Gripen E/F
In August 2024, Scramble Magazine first reported that the selection committee of the Kong Thap Akat Thai (RTAF, Royal Thai Air Force) chose the Saab 39E/F Gripen Next Generation fighter aircraft to replace its ageing fleet of Lockheed Martin F-16A/B Fighting Falcons.
On 4 June 2025, Saab issued a press release confirming the selection. Official negotiations between all involved parties can now begin, with a contract expected to be signed in August 2025.
The Gripen NGs will replace the F-16A/Bs currently operated by 102 Squadron. It is anticipated that 12 to 14 aircraft will be ordered, starting with an initial purchase of four (three Gripen E and one Gripen F). A support package for the initial phase includes training for 26 personnel (six pilots and 20 technicians) from 2025 to 2029.
Earlier this year, the RTAF evaluated the Gripen's ability to operate from makeshift runways and highways, culminating in a test on 27 February. With its Short Takeoff and Landing (STOL) capability and reinforced landing gear, the Gripen proved well-suited for such operations, an important factor in its selection over the F-16 Block 70/72 Viper.
