General

Located in the west point of Bretagne, in the department of Finistère, is the Base Aéronavale Lanveoc-Poulmic. Three helicopter units are based here, as is a small fixed wing training unit. The airfield is co-located with the naval harbour called Poulmic.

Layout

The airfield has a west-east orientated runway with all the aprons and hangars to the south. Around the north part of the airfield is a small road; the west part of the airfield is along the D63.

Getting There

It is a bit off-track as you have to drive westbound into Bretagne. First you have to take the N165/E60 between Brest and Quimper. At Châteulin take the D887 towards Crozon. Just before Crozon take the D63 to the right towards Lanvéoc to pass the airport at your right.

Around the Airport

1East side approach

Driving towards Lanvéoc on the D63, keep right towards Kertanguy and follow the signs with 'BAN'. This road will lead towards the North Gate of the airfield and will pass the west landing runway. There is ample space to park your car and get a nice spot, although it is quite open. From this spot you also have a view onto the three easterly aprons. The first hangar is used for the CAPs and MS893s. The second hangar is next to the Fire Department and contains the Super Frelons and Lynxes. The third hangar contains the Alouette 3s. It is best to park the car on the road towards spot 4 and walk towards the landing lights for the best place near spot 1 while standing a bit away from the base surrounded by shrubberies.

2West side approach

Onto the D63 you will pass the easterly landing runway. Just park your car and find a good spot. Just before the lights you will see a crash gate at your right side. Through this gate, due to the height of the shrubberies, you will be unable to read the Lynxes and Super Frelons on the westerly aprons at this moment.

4View of harbour

From spot 1 you can drive via Kertanguy towards the coastline where you will have a view on the harbour where ships with helicopters embarked could be anchored. Do keep left to arrive at this spot. You will have to pass through a farm site. Also the preserved Etendard 4M could be seen inside the harbour complex just north of the tall small building. Best spot is 50 meters further while passing a bunker. While driving towards spot 4 you will pass the runway lights. You could park your car here and get a nice landing spot while not being in the open and visible from the road or airport.

The best spot at Lanveoc is spot 1, shown here by Rob Hendriks who pictured this Alouette 3 in landing.

Also taken at spot 1 is this locally based MS893, taken by Rob Hendriks
