General

The base is located South of the city of Jever. AFter the disbandment of JBG38 Friesland at Jever, the only remaining unit was the Luftwaffe Instandhaltungsgruppe 21. This unit was responsible for overhaul on F-4Fs and thereafter involved in scrapping former Luftwaffe Tornados. Although not the most active place to be, it offersed a couple of relatively good spots for the hobby.

Operations at Jever finally ended by late September 2013 and it was decommisioned as an air base. The infrastructure stayed untouched so far.

Layout

The airbase is in a wooded area. There are two large shelter areas on the south side near the eastern and western runway thresholds. The north side has two dispersal areas. Some ramps are situated on both sides of the runway, so it is hard to get a good overview.

Getting There

The easiest way of getting to Jever is by taking either the A28 (towards Oldenburg) or the A29 towards Wilhelsmhaven. From these highways, you either (A28) head for Aurich (and then on to Jever) or, if you are using the A29, take the B210 towards Jever.

Around the Airport

1East side approach

The approach of runway 28 is in a wooded area, but is a nice and relaxed spot to venture for both reading and photography. This spot can be found by exiting the B210 at Schortens and taking the K95 towards Schortens. If you follow this road you can enter the Ginsterweg (to the right) near Schoost. By following the signs toward the 'Forsthaus' you will end up near the approach. You can position yourself to your liking.

2West side approach

The approach of runway 10 is OK for both reading and photography. To get here from the B210 take the exit into Jever (road number L812). This will lead to the L813 towards Cleverns and Rispel. Following the L813 you will pass the runway approach lighting and you can turn left towards the base just after passing these lights.

3Dump

The remains of the aircraft scrapped on base are dumped near spot 3. Hulks of Tornados and F-4s can be collected from here every now and then. To get here, you can walk through the farm land along the fence from spot 2 and get quite close. The second preserved Starfighter can also be seen from here.

Sander Vlekke took this fine action shot of F-4F 38+33 from spot 2.
