Brief history Puntland sounds quite new to most of us, and although this may be so, the origins of this northernmost part of Somalia may even date back to the famed 'Land of the Punt' from the time of nthe Pharaos. Anyway, it exists since 1998, and is part of the federal State of Somalia, albeit with an own president and parliament.
The Puntland government formed a small police force to combat piracy and illegal fishing in 2010. This force uses a limited number of aerial assets.
