B738M AirCanada 640Air Canada unveils updated fleet plan

On 17 December 2024, Air Canada held an investors' day. During that day, the airline presented an updated fleet plan which has quite some interesting bits for us aviation enthusiasts.

Most notable is that Air Canada plans to transfer all of its Boeing B737-8s from the mainline to its low-cost subsidiary Air Canada Rouge. There, they would be replacing an ageing all-Airbus fleet. The transition from Airbus to Boeing at Rouge should be completed by 2028.

By that same year, Air Canada mainline plans to have a passenger-fleet that consists of the A220, A321, A330, B777, and B787. To be able to reach this, the airline is looking at increasing orders for the A220 and A321XLR to replace its current A319s, A320s and A321s in the fleet. An initial order for five more A220-300s was announced by the airline on 20 December 2024.

Today, Air Canada's fleet is made-up of 34 A220-300s, four A319s, eighteen A320s, nineteen A321s, 20 A330-200s, 41 B737-8s, two B767-300ERs, six B767-300Fs, six B777-200LRs, eight B787-8s, and 31 B787-9s. Air Canada's Rouge fleet is made-up of eighteen A319s, five A320s, and fifteen A321s.

The airline currently has open orders with Airbus for 26 A220-300s and fifteen A321XLRs. With Boeing it has open orders for eighteen B787-10s.
